Bao Phuong is a traditional moon cake shop, over 70 years old in the capital, so not only Hanoians but also visitors from other provinces and overseas Vietnamese also come to line up to buy cakes every Mid-Autumn Festival.
Taking advantage of her lunch break to go from Yen Hoa Street (Cau Giay) to Thuy Khue to buy bread, Ms. Do Thu Trang (23 years old) said she had waited for more than an hour but still had not had her turn. However, she was still very happy because "every year I see this scene so I am used to it".
"It's cool today so waiting isn't difficult. I want to buy a few boxes of moon cakes to give to my parents and relatives on this occasion," said Trang, adding that her family has been eating traditional moon cakes for many years.
Mr. Pham Van Truong's order
Receiving a customer's order at 9am for 5 boxes of cakes, Mr. Pham Van Truong had to wait 2 hours to get the cakes as requested by the customer.
"These days, many people order moon cakes, so I take advantage of the opportunity to deliver them to earn extra money. Many customers are even willing to hire me to stand in line," said Mr. Truong, adding that orders have skyrocketed since around the 10th day of the 8th lunar month, mainly from regular customers and people working during office hours.
Mr. Pham Hai Dang, the third generation owner of Bao Phuong bakery, said that this year, the number of customers coming to buy cakes is more stable than in previous years. From around the 11th of the 8th lunar month, the number of customers increased dramatically, and the closer to the full moon day, the more customers came to buy cakes.
According to Mr. Dang, the store has about 120 - 130 employees. The price of moon cakes this year has increased slightly compared to last year, about 10%. The most popular are mixed baked cakes and mixed sticky rice cakes, priced at 55,000 VND each.
