YenBai - Recently, farmers in the mountainous area of Mu Cang Chai (Yen Bai) have boldly converted ineffective rice fields and gardens to grow crops with high economic efficiency, most recently strawberries. Strawberry models have initially shown positive signs and can become the main crop in the Winter-Spring crop.
People intercrop strawberries with onions and garlic to both increase income and eliminate harmful strawberries and insects. |
These days, the strawberry garden of more than 1,000 trees of Mr. Ly A Vang's family in Group 3, Mu Cang Chai town (Yen Bai) is quite bustling with the visits of many locals and tourists. Especially on weekends, there are many visitors coming to pick and buy strawberries, sometimes there are no more to sell.
Mr. Vang said that this was only the first harvest but the signal was very encouraging, when after 4 months of care, the strawberry plants were all full of fruit. With an average selling price of 100,000 - 120,000 VND/kg, his family earned tens of millions of VND in profit.
"I find Mu Cang Chai quite cool, suitable for growing strawberries, so it gives higher income than other crops. Next year I will grow more to serve the people" - Mr. Vang said.
The family of Mr. Giang A So in Hang Gang village, Lao Chai commune, Mu Cang Chai district also went to many places to learn and researched very carefully about the climate and weather of their hometown before planting strawberries. At the end of last year, he bought 3,200 strawberry plants from Son La to plant on 3,000 square meters of rice fields. Up to now, the strawberry area has been harvested, in just the first few days of the season, the family has earned nearly 20 million VND.
According to Mr. So, on the same land area, strawberry plants bring in several times more income than rice and corn, while the care is not more difficult. Therefore, in the near future, the family will continue to convert some fields and gardens to strawberry plants to develop the family economy.
"If I grow rice on this area, I will only get 20 bags of rice and sell it to the market for only about 10 million VND, but if I grow strawberries, when I sell all my garden, I will earn from 35 to 40 million VND by the end of the season. I will learn more techniques and increase the strawberry growing area in the future" - Mr. So shared.
Not only providing income from selling fruit, the strawberry gardens of Mong households in Mu Cang Chai also attract many tourists to visit and experience, and can become a unique tourism product in the future.
Ms. Phung Mui Lai, in Mu Cang Chai town, Mu Cang Chai district, said that she and many tourists were very impressed with the strawberry garden full of fruit of the Mong people here.
According to Ms. Lai: "In reality, they take care of the strawberries here very carefully and safely. I have bought strawberries from other places, but picking them in the garden is sweeter."
To help strawberries grow well, strawberry growers in Mu Cang Chai intercrop other crops such as onions and garlic. This not only helps generate additional income on the same cultivated area, but also repels insects and prevents some parasitic diseases caused by insects; people also do not have to use additional pesticides that are harmful to health.
In the coming time, to make the strawberry growing model more effective, farmers in this mountainous district also hope that the government and relevant agencies will provide more support in terms of capital, technology, etc., thereby helping people increase their income, eliminate hunger, and sustainably reduce poverty.
