Four notable films have been and are being shown in Vietnamese theaters to respond to the heat of the 97th Oscar Awards in 2025. Among them is “The Black Hole”, which won the Oscar in 2015, which is being shown again. In addition, there are three films competing directly this year, including a candidate for the Best Picture category - considered one of the most important categories of the award.

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will take place from the evening of March 2 at the Dolby Theatre local time, equivalent to 7am on March 3 Hanoi time. K+ is the broadcaster.

1. Interstellar - IMAX Re-release

On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, “The Black Hole” was released in many countries in IMAX format. With its eye-catching audio-visual content, the film received a golden statuette for special effects, along with 4 other nominations for soundtrack, sound design, sound editing and production design at the 2015 Oscars .

“Black Hole” was released in 2014, set in the not-too-distant future when the Earth is gradually being completely destroyed by pollution. The male lead Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) receives a mission from NASA, along with a group of space travel experts to find a new home for humanity. Although the responsibility is so great, his greatest motivation is to return to his children.

Taking viewers from the journey of a father to a hero, “The Black Hole” is now considered one of the most outstanding films in director Christopher Nolan’s career. Audiences rated the film 8.7/10 points from 2.3 million reviews on IMDb; 73% rated “fresh tomatoes” from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

In Vietnam, the film will be shown from February 28th mainly in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Due to the popularity of the film and limited screenings in theaters with IMAX screens, most of the tickets have been sold out.

2. The Substance

At this year's Oscars, "The Miracle Drug" is a candidate in many important categories such as best picture, director, actress, original screenplay and best makeup.

“The Elixir” is a body horror film that explores the obsession of a fading star named Elisabeth Sparkle (played by Demi Moore). To cope with the feeling of being abandoned and forgotten, she decides to inject herself with a mysterious yellow serum, which creates a youthful and ambitious version of herself. But it is from here that Elisabeth begins to sink into a dark battle with her own mind and body.

The film was critically acclaimed at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival . Sites such as The Hollywood Reporter and Variety respectively rated it as “A film that makes you think deeply about the true value of beauty, and the horror of not being able to control your body”; or “Director Coralie Fargeat takes the body horror genre to new heights.”

“The Miracle Drug” was first released to Vietnamese audiences in 2024 on Halloween (October 30). At that time, the film earned more than 6 billion VND. This number is expected to increase slightly when the film returns to theaters again from February 28.

3. Flow

“Lac Troi” is the only Oscar-nominated animated film to be shown this time. Previously, Vietnamese distributors imported the film “Robot Hoang Sa” (also an Oscar nominee in the animation category, competing directly with “Lac Troi”).

The film tells the story of a group of animals, including a black cat, a golden dog, a capybara, a lemur and a secretary bird (a snake-eating bird), who are adrift on a boat during a "great flood."

The entire work has absolutely no dialogue, only the instinctive interactions of the animals. However, also from instinct, each animal learns to live together in peace and help each other in times of trouble.

“Lac troi” is Latvia’s representative for this year’s Oscars. It is also the best-selling film in the country’s cinemas, with over 300,000 tickets sold (equivalent to about 16% of the population). The film won many important awards such as the Golden Globe, European Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, etc. “Lac troi” will be released to Vietnamese audiences from March 7, and can be viewed early on March 1-2.

4. Vampire Nosferatu (Nosferatu)

Besides “The Elixir,” “Nosferatu” is another Oscar nominee in the horror genre that is being shown in Vietnam. The film currently holds four nominations in the categories of best cinematography, production design, costume design, and makeup and hairstyling.

“Nosferatu” is a horror film about a young girl and the monstrous vampire she bewitches. It is based on two original works: “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror” (1922) and an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel “Dracula” (1897).

The work was directed by Robert Eggers - one of the young filmmakers highly appreciated in Hollywood today. "Nosferatu" was praised most for its visuals, dense haunting atmosphere and the performance of the female lead played by Lily Rose Depp.

The film's IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes scores are positive, with 7.3/10 points from 164,000 reviews and 84% "fresh tomatoes" respectively. Along with that, there are also negative reviews about the excessive seriousness that the film tries to convey, the slow pace of the film, and even the lack of originality... The film will be released in Vietnamese theaters from February 28./.
