After the loss to China, coach Philippe Troussier changed nearly half of the Vietnamese team's starting lineup. Goalkeeper Dinh Trieu replaced Van Lam, while defenders Minh Trong and Viet Anh replaced Viet Hung and Ngoc Hai. In midfield, Thai Son replaced Tuan Anh, while Dinh Bac started to fill the void left by Van Toan.
However, the match against Uzbekistan on the evening of October 13 was very different from the match against China three days earlier. The Vietnamese team no longer dominated possession of the ball, but had to defend against the constant pressure of the opponent. The Uzbekistan team controlled the ball well, passing the ball smoothly in short distances thanks to the skillful players.
Vietnam team has one more friendly match to test the playing style.
Instead of playing 3-5-2 like the match against China, the Vietnamese team had to play with 5 defenders (5-3-2), focusing on counter-attacking defense. Coach Troussier's defense only lasted until the 27th minute. After Tien Anh's wrong pass, Oston Urunov dribbled into the penalty area and scored a tricky shot to open the score for Uzbekistan.
The Vietnamese team's defense did not close the gap firmly enough, allowing the opponent to dribble and shoot past goalkeeper Dinh Trieu. This was also a problem the defense exposed in previous matches, when they did not keep a reasonable distance and were ineffective in blocking.
After conceding the goal, the Vietnamese team tried to reorganize the game, but against a tight and well-pressing Uzbekistan team, the players could only push the ball out to the sidelines or pass long to look for opportunities. These tactics were ineffective, as evidenced by the fact that the Vietnamese team did not have a single shot on target in the first 45 minutes.
Vietnam team deadlocked
In the second half, Uzbekistan slowed down their attack and stopped applying high pressure. This opened up opportunities for the Vietnamese team to coordinate and develop the ball from home. However, despite their smooth short passes in midfield, Coach Troussier's players lacked ideas when moving the ball to the opponent's half.
The disjointedness and lack of connection between the lines caused the Vietnamese team to not only be stuck in the attack phase, but also concede another goal. In the 66th minute, Alikulov doubled the gap for the Uzbekistan team with a high header, after defeating captain Viet Anh in the air.
Coach Troussier tried many positions, but most of them did not perform well. The Vietnamese team also did not have any clear coordination in this match, in the context of the constant pressure created by Uzbekistan, along with the reasonable defensive play that the Central Asian representative showed, it was a difficult problem that Van Toan and his teammates could not solve.
Losing 0-2 to Uzbekistan, the Vietnamese team has gained more experience to perfect their playing style. On October 14, the whole team will leave for Korea to prepare for the last friendly match of October, taking place on October 17 against the Korean team.
