In the 9th match of the 2024 Olympiad that ended this morning, the Vietnamese women's chess team made a splash when they defeated the Bulgarian team, the reigning European champions. In which, Vietnam's number 1 player Pham Le Thao Nguyen (elo 2,380) was at a disadvantage holding the black pieces, excellently defeating former world women's chess champion Antoaneta Stefanova (elo 2,416) after 60 moves of wits on board 1.
Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong won impressively in game 9.
Young player Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong (elo 2,214) shined at table 4 with a victory over Krasteva Beloslava (2,295). At table 2, Vo Thi Kim Phung (elo 2,320) held a draw against Salimova Nurgyul (elo 2,412). Thanks to that, although Luong Phuong Hanh lost at table 3, the Vietnamese women's chess team still had a 2.5-1.5 victory over the Bulgarian team.
Vietnam women's chess team defeats reigning European champion Bulgaria
This is the third consecutive victory of the Vietnamese women's chess team. After 9 games, Pham Le Thao Nguyen and her teammates won 7, lost 2, and had 14 points with the group of teams ranked from 3rd to 10th, but ranked 11th because of the lower coefficient than their opponents. In game 10 taking place tonight, the Vietnamese women's chess team will face the host Hungary. The focus will be on the battle of wits on board 1 when former Vietnam number 1 Hoang Thanh Trang, now playing for the Hungarian team, will face Pham Le Thao Nguyen.

In the 9th round of the men's team, the Vietnamese team drew 2-2 with the 8th seed, England. Le Tuan Minh (elo 2,564) continued to show his brilliant form when he defeated McShane Luke (elo 2,611) at table 3. Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son shared points with their opponents at table 1 and table 2, respectively. However, at table 4, Tran Tuan Minh (elo 2,434) lost to Jones Gawain (elo 2,646), so the Vietnamese men's chess team drew with England. After 9 rounds, Le Quang Liem and his teammates ranked 10th and faced the Spanish team in round 10.
