As announced before the tournament, despite facing highly rated U.21 Canada, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet gave the opportunity to play to young players and players who had little chance to play in previous international tournaments. The main striker Dang Thi Hong, who was called up to the national team for the first time, was given a starting position alongside Vi Thi Nhu Quynh, Nguyen Thi Tra My, Nguyen Thi Trinh, Dinh Thi Tra Giang, setter Kim Thoa and libero Le Thi Yen.
Playing with a reserve team, the Vietnamese girls entered the game quite confidently and won 25/20. However, in the next two games, the U.21 Canada team played more effectively, winning consecutively 25/22, 25/20 to lead the Vietnamese women's volleyball team 2-1.
Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's adjustments in personnel and tactics, especially sending No. 1 hitter Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen onto the field, helped the Vietnamese women's volleyball team regain their position in the fourth game, winning 25/19, equalizing the score 2-2, then winning 15/9 in the decisive fifth game to secure a 3-2 overall victory.
Tomorrow (July 23), the Vietnamese women's volleyball team will play the second match of the Shanghai Future Stars International Volleyball Tournament against the Shanghai Youth Team at (6:00 p.m.). At 3:30 p.m. on July 24, Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's students will play the final match of Group B against Red Sparks Club (Korea). If they win first or second place in the group, Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's students will qualify for the semi-finals.
