Talking Eyes (Kim Dong Publishing House) is a pure work for children. The messages are conveyed by author Huy Hai in a gentle and natural way.
Belonging to the 9X generation, Huy Hai is a young writer who is striving every day to affirm his name. He has published the novel Live Again (Sbooks and Literature Publishing House), the short story collections: Looking for Each Other in the City (Kim Dong Publishing House), Knowing There Will Be Yesterday (Vietnamese Women Publishing House) and We Are Each Other's Youth (Culture - Literature Publishing House, co-published with Bao Chau). The Talking Eyes marked his first foray into children's literature.
The story of the work takes place in the summer, so Talking Eyes does not focus on stories about friendship and school but focuses on family and the relationships between members. The main character is a boy named Mia, who lives with his grandparents, parents, "single" uncle Huy and his "unlovable" younger brother named Hung.
"Talking Eyes" is the first children's literature work from 9X author Huy Hai. |
Because their parents were busy with work, grandparents were the people Mia and her siblings were closest to. Perhaps, this was the best thing about Mia and her siblings, as grandpa had many stories to tell them.
From the familiar, simple, sometimes funny stories between the three grandfathers and grandchildren, such as stories about names, about the relationship between siblings in the family, stories about rewards and punishments for doing right or wrong, stories about keeping promises... These stories can be found in every family, so when reading Talking Eyes , children can easily find closeness and familiarity with themselves.
“As siblings in the same family, when playing together, we must know how to give in to each other, not quarrel or fight. That way, we love each other. And when siblings love each other, our grandparents and parents will be at ease. That is love for the whole family” (Excerpt from Talking Eyes , author Huy Hai).
In particular, Talking Eyes also brings a meaningful message about love between family members. As the grandfather told Mia, the eyes are the windows to the soul, "the eyes not only help us see the outside world but also store our inner thoughts and feelings. The eyes also know how to express our own thoughts". Therefore, to love someone, sometimes you just need to look into their eyes, then care, share and sympathize in time.
In addition, through the story between Mia and her uncle named Huy, author Huy Hai skillfully conveys the love and passion for reading to children, helping them understand that "each book has its own value". From the exchange between the uncle and nephew, young readers learn how a book is born, the benefits of reading as well as the meaning of sharing books with everyone after reading.
The small examples from author Huy Hai will be a source of encouragement and inspiration for children to kindle their love for books. This is shown through the grandfather's sharing with Mia: "Reading books will help you broaden your mind. Reading books will also help you learn more stories. Stories warm my little heart."
With only 100 pages, along with cute pictures from artist Nonchan, Talking Eyes is a worthy gift for children, helping them understand and love their loved ones and the familiar things around them. And although this is the first time coming to children's literature, I believe that Huy Hai will go further if he has enough passion and love for children.
