Ho Chi Minh City Economic Forum 2024 is "Industrial transformation, a new driving force for sustainable development of Ho Chi Minh City".
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Nguyen Van Nen listen to many proposals and comments.
Mr. Pham Binh An, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Development Studies (HIDS), said that in fact, Ho Chi Minh City has implemented industrial transformation quite early, since 2000 there has been a shift in industrial production, relocation of polluted and labor-intensive industrial parks. Many enterprises apply 4.0 technology, have high-tech industrial parks. By 2023, according to the assessment of the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ho Chi Minh City will have a digital economic industry contributing nearly 15% to GDP, the cumulative production value of high-tech parks will reach 150 billion USD. Top 100 cities with the most dynamic innovative startup ecosystems in the world.
"However, the development is unsustainable and in-depth. There are many enterprises but their competitiveness is still modest; there is a lack of leading enterprises. Industries that develop extensively based on labor have reached their limit... From there, the city's contribution is decreasing, GDP and export ratio are also decreasing. The city is shifting to trade and service delivery, but industrial development is not sustainable and not really effective" - Mr. Pham Binh An stated.
Faced with these limitations and challenges, Ho Chi Minh City has implemented many transformation policies towards high-tech application, digital transformation, green transformation; restructuring and upgrading industries, developing industry in depth, prioritizing industries applying modern and environmentally friendly technology...
Ms. Kiva Allgood - Director of the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chains, Member of the World Economic Forum (WEF) - commented that the major trends driving industrial transformation will pose challenges but also bring incredible opportunities for Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam.
With its strategic location and established manufacturing base, this is the time for Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam to continue to develop and pioneer in the manufacturing sector. With the establishment of the C4IR Center in Ho Chi Minh City - Vietnam, the Government, industry and experts can together seize this moment and shape the future of manufacturing.
Dr. Chad Bown - Chief Economist, US Department of State - also said that the industrial transformation process is taking place globally, including the supply chain and Vietnam has the opportunity to attract FDI, especially in high-tech and semiconductor technology fields.
"In 2023, the US granted visas to about 20,000 Vietnamese students to study abroad, focusing on STEM, engineering, mathematics, technology and business. This is also one of the ways to work together in the transition process; together looking for ways to cooperate" - Dr. Chad Bown said.
