The Vietnamese sports delegation won 3 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 19 bronze medals, ranking 21st in the medal tally at the 19th ASIAD. Although the sports delegation achieved the set target, it did not achieve the expected results.
"On behalf of the leaders of the Vietnamese sports delegation, I would like to apologize to fans nationwide and hope that in the coming time, the Vietnamese Sports Delegation will continue to receive attention from all levels, sectors, and fans, and we will continue to strive to improve the achievements of Vietnamese sports," said Mr. Dang Ha Viet, Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training, Head of the Vietnamese Sports Delegation at the 19th ASIAD.
The gold medals of the Vietnamese delegation came from shooting (athlete Pham Quang Huy, men's 10m air pistol event), sepak takraw (women's sepak takraw team of 4), karate (Nguyen Thi Phuong, Luu Thi Thu Uyen, Nguyen Ngoc Tram in women's team kata event).
Head of Vietnam Sports Delegation Dang Ha Viet
Vietnam sports achieved the set target of the number of gold medals (2-5 gold medals). However, the achievements of Vietnamese athletes in general at the ASIAD arena are not high. In terms of Southeast Asian sports delegations alone, Vietnam ranked only 6th, after Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.
According to Head of Delegation Dang Ha Viet, the Vietnamese sports delegation had some regrets about missing out on the gold medal. They were Nguyen Thi That in cycling, Nguyen Thi Tam, Ha Thi Linh in boxing, Nguyen Thi Ngoan in karate...
"What we are pleased with is that the athletes have tried their best to compete for the country's flag, including those who have completed their tasks excellently, such as the shooting and sepak takraw teams, each team won 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal, and 1 bronze medal.
The karate team won 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal, 2 bronze medals. Although many sports did not win gold medals such as gymnastics, archery, volleyball... the young athletes showed remarkable progress," Mr. Dang Ha Viet added.
Sharing about the issue of developing Vietnamese sports in the future, the Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training said: "The activity of selecting talents for Vietnamese sports is like panning for gold. If we "pan the sand" in 63 provinces and cities and in the primary school system, we will find many talents.
Currently, although we say we are investing heavily, it is only focusing on training and competition at the national and youth team levels.
We need a comprehensive, scientific and methodical process, from selection, training, coaching, recovery, injury prevention and treatment, and a scientific team with modern equipment to support the work of testing, evaluating athletes, analyzing opponents, and especially key sports need a competition system from elementary level.
