Diva Thanh Lam: Audiences who are not close enough to me will be allergic to my voice

As a guest on The Khang show, People's Artist Thanh Lam shares her views on life and career.

When asked about the craziest thing I've ever done in love: "The symbol of love is an angel holding a bow and shooting arrows. The craziest, most foolish thing I've done in love is not seeing the blind spot."

The singer said that she had received many messages from young audiences. They said that whenever they felt stuck in life, they would turn on a Thanh Lam song to give them more energy, awaken their sense of life and help them escape from their own darkness.

"Every artist has people who love them, and there are also people who don't really understand them. Like a dish, some people can eat spicy food, some can eat salty food, some can eat sour food. I have a personality, but I find that if I'm gentle and not too strong, I'll be more easily accepted.

But since I was a child, I have been a very individualistic person, always believing in myself. Of course, there are times when I am wrong, that is my blind spot. But mistakes can be corrected," Thanh Lam confided.

To the question: "People say Thanh Lam is so individualistic that sometimes she is a bit stubborn and doesn't even listen much. Is this true or not?"

The female artist said that she started singing when she was 3 years old. But her parents did not want her to sing because every time she performed, she was often worried, and when she did, she got sick and lost her voice. Therefore, Thanh Lam's parents thought that her singing ability was very poor.

"My parents taught me to play the pipa. I still studied and studied very well. But I was determined to learn to sing. That was also a success thanks to my stubbornness and perseverance.

I think my stubbornness has brought me many results. But there are also times when I make mistakes because I believe that my thoughts and determination are right. But in fact, there are also mistakes," Thanh Lam confided.

In the stage of cognitive maturity

People's Artist Thanh Lam has just returned with the album "Cuon phim". The diva said that what she likes most about this album is that in the past she often sang with a lot of emotion, but now Thanh Lam admits that she is in a stage of maturity in terms of awareness.

"In my previous songs, I sang with a lot of emotion, with a very strong fire. There were also times when life had many challenges, suddenly I wanted something strong, to overcome the limits.

I think life experiences are things that need to happen. I also need to have moments when I can be true to my music, to speak honestly to my soul. So, there are also audiences who are not close enough to understand, people are very allergic. But in fact, those are the most real things about me.

Internationally, artists are also very accepting of something unusual, groundbreaking and a little crazy. But Asians often prefer soft, gentle things that touch people's hearts.

I think, as an artist, I also have to be balanced. Over the past few decades, I have also had time to meditate and see many things, including my own mistakes.

Sad and regretful when being scolded for the performance "New Ao Ca Mau"

In 2024, People's Artist Thanh Lam rarely participated in the game show "Our Song Vietnam". Besides the performances showing a very different Thanh Lam on stage, the diva also received many mixed comments with the performance "Ao Moi Ca Mau".

Thanh Lam sang with a Western accent and threw herself into performing "Ao Moi Ca Mau" but received a lot of controversy.

Sharing on the program "The Khang show", Thanh Lam said that in this performance, her team challenged Thu Minh to sing hip-hop, new and modern. However, she performed the performance through the director. She did not come up with the controversial choreography or splits herself.

"I myself am not very light. I had to wear a pair of shoes so that when they lifted me up, I would be as soft as possible. The shoes I wore in the performance were only for dancing. So everyone scolded me a lot. They said I was wearing a traditional Vietnamese dress and shoes.

At first, I was very sad because people's judgments were relatively short-sighted. You only look at the outside without seeing the depth, the hardships of an artist. Being an artist is also very difficult because not everyone can love you. When they have something different from me, they will be very allergic to me.

But actually, this is a song I really like and it's quite difficult. I have to sing in a Western dialect, have to chant, practice choreography until my arms and legs are bruised, and wear an outfit I've never worn before. I went all in, but in the end it wasn't well received. I'm very sorry. It's sad, but I accept it," Thanh Lam confided.
