On November 27, at Gia Lam airport (Hanoi), units inside and outside the military are urgently preparing for the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2024.

One of the forces that received special attention was the 88 military dogs (service dogs) of Border Guard Intermediate School 24.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Tran Quoc Huong, Head of Mobile Group 4, Border Guard Intermediate School 24, the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2024 marks the first time that military dogs have participated in the performance.

115 trainers and 88 military dogs will perform 3 opening events: Performing basic disciplinary movements in block formation, performing fire hoop jumping and jumping over obstacles.

In addition, 30 trainers and 27 other service dogs were assigned to provide security for the event.

Lieutenant Colonel Tran Quoc Huong said that immediately after being assigned the task by the Ministry of National Defense and the Border Guard Command, Border Guard Intermediate School 24 selected 145 officers, trainers and 115 service dogs of the unit to participate in the opening ceremony. Among them were 36 military dogs that had participated in the search for missing victims in the catastrophic landslide in Lang Nu, Lao Cai in September.

The unit identified this as an especially important and difficult task, but one that is very proud and honorable. Therefore, the Party Committee and the School Board are determined to bring the best performance at the exhibition.

The process of selecting, preparing and training the military dogs began in early March. Up to now, the service dog team has been practicing increasingly difficult performances.

“To be able to train the reflexes of military dogs is a very long process. During the training process, we train the military dogs in all different conditions, from getting used to the noise of the environment, to external stimulation so that each service dog can participate in the performance at the opening ceremony,” Lieutenant Colonel Tran Quoc Huong shared.

Participating in this exhibition, Border Guard Intermediate School 24 selected two dog breeds including purebred German Shepherd and Belgian Shepherd (Malinois) - two fighting dog breeds with good health, endurance and uniform formation.

The most prominent in the dog squad is VAT - a 7-year-old purebred German Shepherd. Before being selected to perform at the opening ceremony of the exhibition, VAT participated in search and rescue operations following landslides at Rao Trang 3 Hydropower Plant (Thua Thien - Hue), earthquakes in Türkiye and landslides in Lang Nu (Lao Cai).

Talking about this military dog, VAT trainer - Major Nguyen Van Huong said that purebred German Shepherd dogs are very suitable for professional training, listen to commands, have good endurance and are loyal to their owners, unlike other fighting dog breeds.

Sharing about the difficulties in training for performances at the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2024, Major Nguyen Van Huong said that martial arts performances or artistic activities with loud noises at the opening ceremony could make the service dogs more excited.

Another limitation is that when training at Gia Lam airport, the space and environment for military dogs is limited, unlike in the unit.

To relieve stress for VAT after hours of hard training, Major Huong often plays football with his military dog.

With more training intensity, the military dogs also have increased nutrients in their diet to ensure their health, such as milk and eggs, in addition to their regular diet.

As the opening day approaches, the officers and trainers are determined to increase the training time so that the dogs can get used to the environment and external stimulation.

The training results of the entire unit over the past 9 months have been reported in detail to the Border Guard Command.

Up to now, all officers, soldiers and 88 military dogs of Border Guard Intermediate School 24 are very confident about their performance at the opening ceremony of the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2024.
