After the mock test, many schools adjusted both their review plans and methods, focusing especially on students with poor results.
Continuously survey to evaluate and improve scores
Mr. Bui Van Xuan - Principal of Le Quy Don High School (Yen Bai) said: Right from the beginning of the school year, the school based on the directives and instructions of the Ministry/Department of Education and Training to develop a plan to organize graduation exam review for grade 12 students. When the new regulations on extra teaching and learning take effect, the school continues to organize free review for students.
To evaluate learning outcomes and promptly adjust teaching and learning methods, the Yen Bai Department of Education and Training organized two mock graduation exams based on the same topic. Preliminary results (based on exam scores) showed that the first round achieved over 80%, and the second round achieved over 90%. After each mock exam, Le Quy Don High School analyzed the results of each subject, class, and student; from there, it classified the subjects to find solutions for each student.
In particular, for students at risk of failing the graduation exam, teachers create Zalo groups to assign appropriate assignments; regularly check the knowledge and skills of these students to make appropriate adjustments.
“According to the new regulations on extra teaching and learning, each subject can only be taught no more than 2 periods per week. Therefore, the school directs the teaching staff to innovate the main teaching methods, actively assign lessons for students to study on their own; guide them on how to study on their own, avoid rote learning and passivity.
Review will be intensified after the end of the main curriculum. Students will continue to participate in the third mock exam according to the common exam format of the school cluster to practice and become familiar with the exam format. The results will be analyzed to make necessary adjustments in the exam review,” said Mr. Bui Van Xuan.
According to the results of the city-wide 12th grade student quality survey recently announced by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, Viet Duc High School (Hoan Kiem, Hanoi) is in the top 20 schools. However, Ms. Nguyen Boi Quynh - Principal of the school said that compared to last year, this result is worse. One of the main reasons is that the new exam format requires students to have a solid grasp of knowledge to be able to achieve good scores.
Regarding the review for the high school graduation exam, Viet Duc High School has developed a plan based on the specific characteristics of the 2018 General Education Program and the format of the high school graduation exam from 2025. In particular, from the second semester of the 2024-2025 school year, the school will strengthen testing and teaching, and survey as it goes.
From now until the end of the program, there are expected to be 5 more rounds of assessment. After each round, teachers will promptly make up for any deficiencies that students have. Learning new knowledge, reviewing old knowledge, and doing practice exercises at the same time has shown good results. For the two subjects of Math and Literature, the school will arrange an additional period for teachers to correct students' work.
“After the survey results, the school adjusted the review, mainly for students with low scores and paid more attention to test-taking techniques. Specifically, it opened an intensive review class for students with survey scores below 5. Of course, the school also covered all the costs of this class.
This is an “open” class, so students will not have to continue studying if they get good results after each test; on the contrary, students who get results below 5 will “join” this class,” Ms. Nguyen Boi Quynh shared.
100% determination to graduate
Based on the results of two mock high school graduation exams organized by the school, Dien Bien District High School (Dien Bien) determined that about 15% of students are at risk of failing graduation. To improve this result, according to Mr. Tran Huy Hoang - Principal of the school, the first and most important thing is to clarify the cause.
The method is to analyze the test results through statistics on the percentage of students who passed/failed in each subject; identify common mistakes, types of exercises/knowledge that students are weak in each subject; compare the results between the two test results to see progress (if any) and the subjects/content that many students are weak in. The school also analyzes the results by class and student group (for example: Input academic ability, living area, family conditions...).
In addition, the school discussed with teachers about students' learning situation in class, level of knowledge mastery, test-taking skills; learned about current teaching methods, difficulties encountered by teachers in the review process; collected teachers' opinions and suggestions on solutions to improve the quality of review in the coming time.
Organize meetings and survey students about difficulties in studying, exam pressure, self-study methods at home; find out about students' preparation for exams, the subjects they feel most worried about. Comparing the results of mock exams with students' academic performance during the learning process is also done to have a more comprehensive view.
After comprehensively analyzing the causes, Dien Bien District High School adjusted its review plan and methods; proposed solutions to support students; strengthened management and direction; and outlined a specific implementation roadmap.
Regarding solutions to support students, Mr. Tran Huy Hoang said that the school organizes free tutoring and knowledge supplement sessions; spends more time for students with weak academic performance; establishes study clubs and study groups, creating a healthy and useful playground for students to exchange knowledge and learn from each other.
It is possible to arrange groups with good students to tutor and support average and weak students. The school also cares about psychological counseling for students, closely communicates with parents and rewards and encourages them promptly. At the same time, it creates a positive learning environment, builds a friendly and open learning atmosphere, encourages students to make efforts and have the will to improve.
Emphasizing the spirit of not being subjective, Mr. Nghiem Hong Trung - Principal of Quoc Oai High School (Quoc Oai, Hanoi) said: Before the results of the survey on the quality of 12th grade students in the whole city were available, the school organized free review sessions for 12th grade students. "Despite difficult financial conditions, in my opinion, the most important thing for schools must be the quality of teaching and learning.
Before the High School Graduation Exam, the Board of Directors set two main tasks with high determination: No students failed the graduation exam and the average score of this year's exam was higher than last year. From there, the effort and responsibility to organize review sessions to help students consolidate and improve their knowledge and skills," Mr. Nghiem Hong Trung emphasized.
In organizing review for high school graduation exams, the Ministry of Education and Training encourages teachers to exploit and use software and review websites to provide review materials, online testing and assessment, and manage student review. Increase personalization in teaching and review activities for students, guide students in learning methods, self-study, and knowledge search. Increase the application of information technology in managing and organizing tests, assessing student review results, etc.
