(Dan Tri) - Survey data from the General Statistics Office shows that the average housing area per capita for apartments is 5.7 square meters lower than that of individual houses.

The General Statistics Office has just announced the results of the 2024 mid-term population and housing census. This is the second mid-term population and housing census conducted in Vietnam after the first survey was held in 2014.

The purpose of the survey is to collect information on population and housing as a basis for assessing the implementation of the socio-economic development plan for the 2021-2025 period; developing policies and planning population and housing to serve the development of the socio-economic development plan for the 2026-2030 period; and monitoring the implementation of the United Nations sustainable development goals to which the Vietnamese Government has committed.

One of the published contents of the survey is the housing and living conditions of households.

The survey results show that the majority of households live in a house or apartment that is privately owned by the household, accounting for 89.7% of the survey sample. The respective ownership rates in rural and urban areas are 96.2% and 79.8%.

The proportion of households living in permanent or semi-permanent houses accounted for 97.6% of the total number of households with housing, an increase of 4.5 percentage points compared to 2019 (accounting for 93.1% of the survey). The gap between the proportion of households living in permanent or semi-permanent houses in urban and rural areas narrowed significantly, to only 3 percentage points. The corresponding proportions in urban areas were 99.4% and in rural areas were 96.4%.

The average housing area per capita in Vietnam in 2024 is 26.6 m2/person, an increase of 3.4 m2/person compared to 2019. The average housing area per capita of apartment buildings is 21.1 m2/person, lower than the 26.8 m2/person for individual houses.

About 41.9% of households live in houses or apartments with an average area per capita of 30 m2/person or more. In addition, 4.1% of surveyed households live in houses or apartments with an area of less than 8 m2/person.

Of these, the proportion of households living in houses or apartments with an average area per capita of less than 8 m2/person in the Southeast region is the highest, accounting for 10.7% of the survey sample. This proportion in the North Central and Central Coast regions is the lowest, at about 2%.

The majority of households are living in houses or apartments that were built and put into use from 2000 to present. The number of these households is 22.9 million, accounting for 81.5% of the survey population.

However, 14.2% of households still live in houses that were built and first used between 25 and 49 years ago. In particular, 1.9% of households still live in houses that are over 49 years old.
