The forum is also one of the important and meaningful events in the series of activities celebrating the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Mongolia.
Vietnam - Mongolia bilateral trade increased 2-3 times
Mongolia was one of the first countries in the world to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam, and Vietnam was the first country in Southeast Asia that Mongolia chose to lay the foundation for diplomatic relations. These pioneering steps have laid a solid foundation for the relationship between the two countries to continuously develop and achieve many outstanding achievements over the past seven decades.

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations, at the end of September, General Secretary and President To Lam made a State visit to Mongolia. The visit elevated the relationship between the two countries to a “Comprehensive Partnership”, opening up opportunities and strategic directions to promote substantive economic cooperation in line with the development needs of both countries. Within the framework of high-level meetings, the leaders of the two countries agreed on important cooperation mechanisms, especially the Intergovernmental Committee on Cooperation, Trade, Science and Technology, to enhance trade promotion and support businesses of the two countries to connect and develop.
Mr. Tran Cong Thang - Director of the Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agricultural and Rural Development spoke at the Vietnam - Mongolia Agricultural Products Promotion Forum |
Speaking at the opening of the Forum, Mr. Tran Cong Thang - Director of the Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agricultural and Rural Development - said that the bilateral trade turnover between Vietnam and Mongolia has increased 2-3 times in recent times (from 41.5 million USD in 2017 to 85 million USD in 2022 and 132 million USD in 2023). In the first 7 months of 2024, the bilateral trade turnover reached 65.5 million USD and the two countries achieved the goal of soon bringing the bilateral trade turnover to 200 million USD. Vietnam and Mongolia both have outstanding advantages in the agricultural sector. Vietnam is a leading exporter of products such as rice, coffee, tropical fruits, etc.
Meanwhile, Mongolia is famous for its high-quality beef, lamb and dairy products. These are areas where businesses from both countries can not only complement each other, but also exploit to meet the growing demand of the global market.
Therefore, the organization of the Vietnam - Mongolia Agricultural Products Promotion Forum will be an important bridge for businesses of the two countries to meet, exchange information and seek cooperation opportunities. In addition, through this event, the two governments will share preferential policies and support mechanisms so that businesses can access each other's markets more effectively.
“We hope that the results achieved from the Forum will be an important foundation for the two sides to go further in increasing bilateral trade turnover in the coming time,” said Mr. Tran Cong Thang.
Expanding trade cooperation opportunities between businesses of the two countries
At the Forum, delegates discussed and shared about the potential for Vietnam-Mongolia trade cooperation in the agricultural sector; guidance on procedures for importing goat and sheep meat into the Vietnamese market; potential and cooperation in raising and slaughtering goats and sheep between the two sides; export of poultry meat and eggs and trade opportunities with the Mongolian market; potential for fruit export and opportunities in the Mongolian market; opportunities for Vietnam-Mongolia cooperation in the service sector; discussion on promoting the potential for Vietnam-Mongolia agricultural product import and export.

Talking about “Potential and opportunities for cooperation in the field of goat and sheep farming and slaughtering with Mongolia”, Mr. Doan Khanh Tam - Deputy Director, Deputy Chief of Office, National Border Committee, Former Vietnamese Ambassador to Mongolia - informed that due to the cold climate of Mongolia, large-scale livestock farming is much more developed than crop farming. The characteristic of livestock farming in Mongolia is natural grazing on vast grasslands, livestock are fed about 3,000 types of herbs on vast grasslands, and the meat quality is delicious. Mongolia has been a member of the World Organization for Animal Health since 1989.
Another area of cooperation with great potential is the project on investing in slaughter lines, meat processing, and cattle bone crushing, etc. In particular, the issue of cattle bones is a painful issue for the Mongolian Government and is of concern to the Government.
Wishing to expand poultry exports to the Mongolian market, a representative of San Ha Company Limited said that the company's main goal is to provide high-quality and safe products, build a strong brand, establish strategic cooperative relationships with localities and study consumer demand to adjust appropriate targets. In addition to the Mongolian market, San Ha also targets other countries in the region and globally, aiming to expand its customer network and affirm its position in the international market.
Although the poultry industry has many advantages for development in the Mongolian market, according to Ms. Pham Thi Ngoc Ha - General Director of San Ha Company Limited - import and export activities still face difficulties and technical barriers in legal documents and export procedures, making Vietnamese livestock products weak in the international market.
Therefore, Ms. Pham Thi Ngoc Ha also recommended that state management agencies simplify legal documents to reduce the time for businesses to carry out import-export procedures. At the same time, support capital sources and special loan packages for businesses to facilitate production expansion and improve competitiveness. In addition, businesses also wish to cooperate in importing products from Mongolia.
"We hope to receive support in trade promotion and product advertising so that businesses have the opportunity to export to neighboring countries, including the Mongolian market," said Ms. Pham Thi Ngoc Ha.
Within the framework of the Forum, a memorandum of understanding on cooperation and distribution of Mongolian goat and sheep meat in Vietnam was signed.
