Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the US said that people can swallow hundreds of microplastic pieces when chewing gum. At the same time, the group also warned people about environmental pollution caused by chewing gum residue, according to AFP news agency on March 28.

The UCLA study focused on an understudied way in which microplastics enter the human body: chewing gum. Lisa Loew, a UCLA doctoral student, chewed seven sticks of gum from different brands before the team analyzed her saliva.

The team found that about 1g of chewing gum released an average of 100 pieces of microplastic, with some types of gum releasing more than 600 pieces of microplastic. The average weight of a stick of gum is 150g. So people who chew about 180 sticks of gum a year could be ingesting about 30,000 pieces of microplastic.

However, the researchers stressed that this figure is nothing compared to the amount of microplastics people ingest in other ways. For example, a 2024 study found that a liter of water in a plastic bottle contains an average of 240,000 pieces/microplastic particles.

Vietnam shakes after 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar

The Institute of Geophysics said the earthquake occurred at 1:20 p.m. yesterday in Myanmar, with a focal depth of 10 km.

More than 1,000 km from the epicenter of the earthquake, people living in high-rise apartments in many districts in Hanoi such as Hai Ba Trung, Hoang Mai, Cau Giay, and Nam Tu Liem recorded objects shaking for more than 10 seconds.

In Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Hoang Phung, an employee at the Viettel building on Cach Mang Thang Tam Street, District 10, said that at around 1:30 p.m., while he was in the hallway on the 23rd floor, he suddenly felt the area shake slightly. The swimming pool near the area where he was standing had water splashing out.

Japanese magazine publishes AI story

Kohkoku Magazine introduces a story 95% AI-generated, set in a world after humanity's extinction.

NHK reported that the work, titled Kage no Ame (Clouds and Rain), was published on March 25. The story revolves around a post-apocalyptic world where humans have disappeared. At that time, artificial intelligence (AI) explores the meaning of emotions through the remaining memories and feelings of humans.

ChatGPT technology was used for the work, under the guidance of writer Rie Kudan, 35. The theme and plot were the ideas of the AI, while Kudan commented and gave direction to the story. In addition, she suggested and edited the two opening and ending parts, and took charge of the remaining 5% of the content. The writing process took about two weeks.

Rie Kudan won the Akutagawa Prize in January 2024 for her novel Tokyo Sympathy Tower. After receiving the award, Kudan admitted that she used ChatGPT to generate 5% of the sentences. Later, an advertising agency asked her to do another work, using AI to complete 95% of the content. Speaking to the news agency, Rie Kudan said: "I took the offer as a challenge and was satisfied with the results of collaborating with AI. This experience gave me the opportunity to reflect on what it means to write fiction."
