According to the Dak Lak Department of Education and Training, this school year, the expected enrollment for grade 10 in public schools is 507 classes with 21,216 students. The number of students enrolled in private high schools, schools not under the Department of Education and Training is 1,600 students.
The total number of 10th grade high school students in the 2024-2025 school year is 22,816 students (accounting for 71.5% of the total number of junior high school graduates, a decrease of 6.46% compared to the rate of the previous school year).
To increase the rate of junior high school graduates entering high school, the Department of Education and Training proposed that the Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee approve the policy of increasing the number of students per class for grade 10, school year 2024-2025. On average, 44 students per class for all high schools in the province (about 1,100 targets).
The 2023-2024 school year is a special year with a sharp increase in the number of junior high school graduates compared to previous school years, with a total of nearly 32,000 students in the province (26,532 in the 2020-2021 school year, 26,836 in the 2021-2022 school year, and 28,464 in the 2022-2023 school year).

In the recent 10th grade entrance exam for the 2024-2025 school year in Dak Lak, only 12 schools organized the exam (the remaining schools considered transcripts), but there were nearly 2,000 failing scores (1 point or less).
Although many schools have lowered their admission scores to very low levels (5-6 points/3 subjects: Math, Literature, Foreign Language), many candidates still fail to get into public high schools (due to failing scores). Therefore, many schools do not meet their enrollment targets (nearly 700 shortfalls).
Mr. Pham Dang Khoa, Director of the Dak Lak Department of Education and Training, said that the reason why schools could not recruit enough students was because the students had zero scores. Regarding the story of zero scores, many parents wondered why other provinces and cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City considered zero scores, while in Dak Lak, one score or less was considered zero.
According to Mr. Pham Dang Khoa, because there are no separate regulations for the 10th grade entrance exam, the department has applied the high school graduation exam regulations to calculate the failing score as 1 point or less.
According to the reporter's investigation, the Ministry of Education and Training assigned localities to proactively develop regulations for the 10th grade entrance exam, but the Dak Lak Department of Education and Training applied the regulations of the high school graduation exam to advise the Provincial People's Committee to apply.
"Schools that organize entrance exams for grade 10 but do not meet their quota will not be allowed to recruit more students. The Department will allow schools in the district to recruit additional students so that the total quota of the districts remains unchanged," said Mr. Pham Dang Khoa.
Currently, many parents with children entering grade 10 in Dak Lak are in a state of confusion and worry, not knowing whether their children will have a school to continue studying or not.
