Mr. Tom NG, Executive Director of HKU Business School, came to Vietnam to directly advise students.
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) organized an educational experience day for students and parents in Ho Chi Minh City on January 6, attracting about 150 participants. According to the two 2024 university rankings of QS (UK), the University of Hong Kong ranked 2nd in Asia and 26th in the world.
Open opportunities to study abroad
Speaking to Thanh Nien on the sidelines of the event, Dr. Phan Quang Tuan, Head of HKU's representative office in Vietnam and professor at HKU Business School, assessed this as a "crucial moment" for studying abroad in Hong Kong. Because, from the end of 2023, this special administrative region decided to relax visa policies for Vietnamese people. Previously, Hong Kong also opened visas for Vietnamese students to study in 2021.
"Studying and working in Hong Kong is now much easier," Mr. Tuan commented.
Relaxed visa policies and many incentives for Vietnamese students make 2024 an "opportunity" to study abroad in Hong Kong, according to Dr. Phan Quang Tuan.
Dr. Tuan also said that international students in Hong Kong are allowed to work on campus for up to 20 hours/week during the school year and there is no limit on time or location during the summer break. After graduation, Vietnamese international students are also allowed to stay and look for work for up to one year. "And after working for two years, then one more year of master's study, you will be considered for permanent residency," Mr. Tuan shared.
According to Mr. Tuan, from this year, HKU will put Vietnam on the list of priority countries for admission. In addition to accepting transcripts instead of requiring SAT or AP exams, in 2024, the school will also coordinate with the Hong Kong Consulate General in Vietnam to award 20 undergraduate scholarships and 6 master's scholarships exclusively for Vietnamese students at some leading schools, worth up to 100% of tuition fees.
"We hope that this scholarship program will increasingly attract Vietnamese students to Hong Kong. If successful, the program is expected to expand to more schools in the future," Mr. Tuan expected, adding that Vietnamese people coming to HKU mainly study business, engineering and medicine.

Many scholarship opportunities
Currently, HKU's representative office in Vietnam is cooperating with an investment fund in Hong Kong to launch a master's scholarship exclusively for Vietnamese people, with a maximum of 10 scholarships per year, worth up to 100% of tuition fees and a full allowance of 120,000 HKD (375 million VND). In 2023, 5 Vietnamese people will be awarded this scholarship, according to Mr. Tom NG, Executive Director of HKU Business School.
In addition to Vietnamese nationality, Mr. Tom said the scholarship also considers candidates based on five other criteria, including: university graduated, average score, professional certificates, internship experience and extracurricular activities. "We want to evaluate candidates comprehensively," Mr. Tom said, adding that HKU Business School also has scholarships for international students, with no limit on the number of places.
For undergraduates, Mr. Vu Hai Truong, Director of University Admissions, assessed that there are not many Vietnamese students studying abroad in Hong Kong, so it is easy for candidates to get scholarships. One of them is the entrance scholarship, which is worth from 50% to full tuition, automatically considered based on the candidate's admission profile. An average score of 9 or higher, a good recommendation letter and a good essay... are factors that help increase the competitiveness of scholarships.
Mr. Vu Hai Truong acknowledged that there are many opportunities to study in Hong Kong for free at the undergraduate level.
According to Mr. Truong, HKU allows cumulative scholarships, so candidates can apply for other types of scholarships if they are suitable and have relevant experience. And compared to other leading schools, HKU tuition is lower, at around 182,000 HKD (568 million VND) per year. "The programs at the school are taught entirely in English, with students from more than 90 countries," the director added.
