To start a successful business, you need to persevere on the path you have chosen"

That is the experience that Ms. Tran Thi Thu Hong (37 years old, living in Phu Ninh hamlet, Phu Duc commune, Chau Thanh district, Ben Tre province), has drawn after starting her own business.

The "bumper crop, low price" problem is haunting.

Ms. Tran Thi Thu Hong confided that since childhood, the image of red ripe rambutan gardens has been deeply engraved in her mind. Her family also has a garden with more than 50 Java rambutan trees planted by her grandparents and nearly 200 longan rambutan trees planted by her parents.

Over time, many families have had to cut down rambutan trees in their gardens to plant other fruit trees because of the problem of "good harvest, low price".

In 2016, while planning to study abroad, Ms. Hong started to try processing rambutan to eat. After many experiments, she found a way to make fragrant jam, chewy pulp, and edible seeds.

Seeing that her relatives and friends praised the deliciousness of the product, she boldly made a large quantity and posted the information online to sell. During the Tet holiday that year, she sold a large amount of rambutan jam. It was this initial success that made her decide not to study abroad anymore but to start a business in her homeland.

In the early days of starting her business, Ms. Hong did everything herself, but faced many difficulties. Because she did not have a standard recipe, many batches of jam had to be discarded because of inconsistent quality. In 2018, she participated in a project to adapt to climate change in the Mekong Delta and was given a dryer and a vacuum cleaner.

From then on, the family's production no longer depended on the weather and saved on labor. However, the difficulties did not stop there. When production had stabilized, severe drought and salinity damaged many areas of crops, including rambutan, in the area. Without raw materials, Ms. Hong's family had to produce at a moderate level.

Ms. Hong's facility has created jobs for many local workers.

At the same time, the Covid-19 pandemic hit, adding to the difficulties. However, she did not give up and persevered on the path she had chosen.

Mother's name product brand

Due to the shortage of rambutan, Ms. Hong has also produced dried bananas covered with coconut sesame, kumquat jam, pineapple, tamarind and star gooseberry. With increasingly improved quality, combined with participation in startup competitions, fairs, exhibitions..., the products under the brand name "Ms. Chin's rambutan" have been known and welcomed by many consumers.

"I named the product brand after my mother. The name has a Western flavor, and sounds sweet and familiar. I hope my children and grandchildren will always remember the mother and grandmother who guided and loved me so much," Ms. Hong shared.

Up to now, the products of "Co Chin's Rambutan" facility are not only consumed domestically but also exported abroad. Many products of the facility have achieved the "One Commune One Product" (OCOP) certificate. The facility creates jobs for 4-10 local workers, depending on the time.

According to Ms. Hong, during the process of starting a business, she encountered many difficulties but she never thought of giving up. A successful start-up not only helps develop the family economy but also creates jobs and output for local farmers' products.

"I started my business from scratch, so I had to go slowly. Currently, the facility has enough machinery to serve production. If there is a large order, I will buy more suitable machinery. I think to start a successful business, you have to commit and persevere on the path you have chosen.

Besides, there should be someone to guide and support skills and knowledge, especially when facing difficulties. In the early days of starting a business, you will encounter many difficulties, if you do not have determination, it is easy to give up halfway.

Besides, when starting a business, you also need the support of your family and in the current context, you need to know how to exploit and take advantage of technology and sell on social networking platforms," Ms. Hong emphasized.
