Excitement from regional press
From December 6 to 9, 2023, the Vietnam Journalists Association will organize the International Journalism Conference "Digital Newsroom Management: Theory, Practice, and Experience in the ASEAN Region" in Hanoi.
The workshop is an open forum to discuss theoretical issues, share the situation, progress and suggest methods and solutions for digital transformation in journalism and media in Vietnam and ASEAN countries.
Talking about the idea of organizing the Workshop, Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi - Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association said that at the 2022 ASEAN Journalists Confederation Conference, the proposal to organize a workshop on the very topical issue of digital transformation in journalism activities from the Vietnamese delegation received a very positive response from press delegations in the ASEAN region.
According to Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi, in 2023, press activities in general, although facing many difficulties in many issues, especially economic issues, to organize an international and regional event considered the biggest event after the Covid19 pandemic, is the effort of specialized units in the Vietnam Journalists Association, the determination of the Association's leaders and the support of functional officials such as: Central Propaganda Department, Ministry of Information and Communications, Central Foreign Affairs Department.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi said that although he had sent invitations to 10 press organizations in the ASEAN region, due to some objective reasons, 3 countries could not send delegations to attend. However, the presence of 7 ASEAN journalist delegations showed that this was a big and important event.
"The connection with press groups in the region went very smoothly, receiving high response, the press groups all prepared their presentations to send to the Workshop. In recent contacts with organizations of countries, we noticed great excitement from these organizations regarding participating in the Workshop", Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi shared.
Resources remain the biggest challenge
It can be said that countries around the world are facing countless opportunities and challenges as digital transformation has reshaped all activities of social life; directly affecting daily life and working habits. This inevitable trend represents a huge breakthrough in socio-economic and human development.
In that context, the media cannot stand aside; digital transformation of the media is not only a matter of survival, it is essential for the survival and development of press agencies, media organizations and journalists.
Referring to the importance of building ASEAN press into a unified bloc, Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi said that in ASEAN there is a connection between 3 pillars, the pillars of security - politics, economy and culture. In particular, organizing the ASEAN Press Conference will contribute to building these 3 pillars, especially in the pillar of culture and press information.
"Organizing the Workshop "Digital Press Management: Theory, Practice, Experience in the ASEAN Region" will help press agencies and journalists in ASEAN better understand and participate more deeply in digital transformation, contributing to creating a stronger ASEAN press, updating new ways of journalism, promoting stronger and better dissemination of press information in the region.
From there, it contributes to mutual understanding between the public and people of ASEAN with the economic, cultural and social situation of each country; strengthens friendship and cooperation between countries in the region ," Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi emphasized.
Regarding the challenges in developing digital transformation of journalism in the region, the Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association said that the biggest difficulty is still the issue of resources. Digital transformation is a trend, and press agencies around the world have caught up relatively early, but for ASEAN countries, some agencies and units still face many difficulties.
In some countries, human resources are still limited, and some press agencies are still slow and do not clearly recognize the importance of this issue.
In addition, according to Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi, the issue of financial resources is also a huge challenge, as digital transformation requires funding and finance, but not all press agencies in ASEAN can meet that condition. Especially, in the current context when the press is facing "fierce" competition from other forms of information, especially social networks, press agencies are facing more difficulties in finding sources of revenue to reinvest in multi-device technology platforms and training for journalists. At the same time, support from the Government and the State for press agencies is still uneven in countries in the region.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi hopes that through this Workshop, ASEAN countries will have a common awareness of the importance of digital transformation in journalism activities, which is an important opportunity for leaders of press agencies and leaders of Journalists Associations in ASEAN countries to exchange experiences on the current situation and level of digital transformation in ASEAN press agencies. It is also an opportunity for units to access new knowledge.
"In this workshop, we invited many experts from large media corporations and large technology corporations to have the opportunity to exchange practical experiences with press agencies in the field of digital transformation," said Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi.
The international press conference “Digital newsroom management: Theory, practice, experience in the ASEAN region” was attended by 7 international delegations from the ASEAN Press Confederation, including: Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore...
On the Vietnamese side, delegates attending the Workshop were representatives of leaders of central departments, ministries, branches and organizations; Party Delegation, Standing Committee, Executive Committee of Vietnam Journalists Association; representatives of leaders of press agencies, Central and local Journalists Associations at all levels, scientists, experts, journalists and a large number of members of Vietnam Journalists Association...
