At the meeting, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong warmly welcomed and thanked Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Philippines to Vietnam Meynardo Los Banos Montealegre and officials of the Philippine Embassy in Vietnam for taking the time to work at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The Deputy Minister affirmed that the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and the Philippines is a strong and friendly relationship. Over the past time, the two sides have continuously developed and achieved many good results in many fields. In particular, promoting exchange and cooperation activities in culture, sports and tourism aims to further enhance understanding and solidarity between the people of the two countries, consolidating comprehensive and substantive bilateral cooperation.
Discussing the situation of cooperation in the fields of culture, sports and tourism between Vietnam and the Philippines in recent times, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong said: In the field of culture and arts, Vietnam and the Philippines signed a cultural cooperation agreement between the two governments on March 28, 1994 (still in effect) and a cultural cooperation program between the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Philippines for the period 2024 - 2029.
Over the years, the two sides have actively implemented cultural and artistic exchange activities on the basis of bilateral and multilateral cooperation within ASEAN. The Philippines has participated in cultural and artistic activities organized by Vietnam and vice versa. Notably, in August 2024, the Philippines attended the 2024 International Dance Festival in Thua Thien Hue and received a Silver Medal.
In the field of sports, Vietnam and the Philippines are two member countries of the Southeast Asian Sports Federation, therefore, they regularly have close cooperation in all areas of sports such as competitions, training, exchanges of experts, coaches, athletes, participation in training courses, conferences on sports held in each country and in the region. Leaders of the sports industry and the Olympic Committee of both sides regularly meet, exchange experiences in management and update information during the occasions of participating in regional and world sports activities.
In the tourism sector, Vietnam and the Philippines signed the 1994 Tourism Cooperation Agreement, the Vietnam-Philippines Tourism Cooperation Plan for the 2006-2008 and 2012-2015 periods, and the Cruise Tourism Cooperation Plan for 2014-2016. Currently, the two sides are exchanging the content of the Draft Cooperation Program between the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam and the Ministry of Tourism of the Philippines.
In order to develop cultural, sports and tourism cooperation commensurate with the available potential, through the working session, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong proposed: The two sides need to continue promoting cooperation in the cultural field within the bilateral and multilateral frameworks of ASEAN. Actively participate in international cultural and artistic activities held in each country, participate in cultural and artistic programs within the framework of ASEAN. In particular, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the strategic partnership (2025) and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (2026), the two sides need to study the possibility of organizing cultural and artistic programs on a rotational basis.
In the field of sports, the Deputy Minister hopes that the two sides will actively exchange delegations at all levels to exchange and learn experiences in managing and organizing sports events. The two sides also need to continue to support and participate in international sports events held in each country.
In the field of tourism, the Deputy Minister suggested that it is necessary to encourage and facilitate airlines to open more direct flights to prominent tourist destinations of the two countries. Strengthen the exchange of information on cruise tourism and new seaports, focus on connecting destinations, and include sea tourism destinations of Vietnam and the Philippines in cruise schedules to create new tours, and jointly promote the development of cruise tourism in the two countries.
Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Philippines to Vietnam Meynardo Los Banos Montealegre sent his condolences to the Government and people of Vietnam for the consequences and losses that Vietnam had suffered due to Typhoon Yagi. At the same time, the Ambassador also expressed his admiration for the spirit of solidarity, resilience as well as the timely support of the Vietnamese Government for the people who were severely affected by the storm.
The Ambassador stated that the Philippines and Vietnam have a very deep bilateral relationship. The two sides not only have close political and economic relations but also promote cultural cooperation, which is one of the factors contributing to the increasingly strong relationship between the Philippines and Vietnam. During the State visit of the President of the Philippines in early 2024, the President also signed many documents, including the agreement on cultural cooperation between the Philippines and Vietnam. This is one of the main pillars for the two sides to promote the bilateral relationship.
According to Ambassador Meynardo Los Banos Montealegre, in the next two years, the Philippine Embassy has plans to organize a series of cultural events in Vietnam. Specifically, in the fourth quarter of 2024, the Philippine Embassy plans to invite Filipino jewelry artisans to Vietnam to display products and organize a Christmas lantern lighting ceremony at the Embassy.
In 2025, the Philippine Embassy plans to organize a number of activities such as: Inviting Philippine artists to Vietnam to exhibit their works; Organizing exhibitions of Philippine artists at museums in Hanoi, or organizing art workshops at galleries and cultural spaces in Hanoi; Organizing exchanges between culinary experts and chefs from the Philippines and Vietnam; Organizing art programs on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the strategic partnership...
"We look forward to the support and cooperation of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in cultural activities held in Vietnam in late 2024 and 2025. I think these are cultural activities organized to mark the milestone in the relationship between the Philippines and Vietnam, and also an opportunity to promote the bilateral relationship between the two countries to become stronger and more sustainable in the coming time" - Ambassador Meynardo Los Banos Montealegre expressed.
Regarding the opinions of Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong on cooperation in the field of sports and tourism, Ambassador Meynardo Los Banos Montealegre said that these are all valuable initiatives to foster cooperation in sports and tourism between the two sides. Thereby, the Ambassador said that not only in the field of culture, but in the coming time, the two sides need to continue to promote cooperation in the field of sports and tourism, the Philippine Embassy is always ready to support and advocate Vietnam's activities in the fields of culture, sports and tourism.
At the end of the working session, the leaders of the two sides believed that the friendly cooperation relationship in culture, sports and tourism will become increasingly substantive and effective, contributing to promoting the cooperative relationship to new heights./.
