Teach children independence early.

Báo Lào CaiBáo Lào Cai05/06/2023

Nowadays, teaching children independence from an early age is a major concern for parents. When children are taught independence early on, they can take care of themselves even without their parents around or when facing difficult situations. Therefore, parents need to learn how to "let go" of their children and teach them independent skills so that they have the opportunity to grow and mature.

Ms. Vu Thi Mai (Coc Leu ward, Lao Cai city) has two young children. Ms. Mai shared: "As a primary school teacher, my job is very busy; many days I don't get home until late at night. Luckily, my son and daughter are both skilled at housework. Every day when I come home from work, the house is clean and tidy, and they even know how to cook dinner to help me."

To help her child become independent early, even before starting first grade, Ms. Mai regularly encouraged her child to do everything within their capabilities and always monitored and supported them as they began to learn how to do things like personal hygiene, tidying up toys, folding clothes, sweeping the house, etc. Now, her child can do many things without needing help from adults.

Because they run a business, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam and her husband, who live in Sa Pa town, are always busy from early morning until late at night. For several years now, Ms. Tam has been teaching her children to help with household chores. On days off, she and her children make food and drinks together, such as spring rolls, sponge cakes, and yogurt. Now, her son, who is in 9th grade, can go to the market daily to buy food and prepare meals to help his parents. Through teaching her son to share household chores, Ms. Tam hopes that when he goes to study far from home, he will be able to take care of himself.

Nowadays, many families are paying more attention to teaching and training their children to be independent. Evidence of this is the increasing number of parents enrolling their children in life skills classes and participating in "military-style summer camps" (referring to preparatory programs for young children). Along with families, preschools and primary schools also frequently organize life skills lessons or outdoor experiential activities to provide children with opportunities to explore the world around them and develop independence. Self-learning and hands-on experience not only fosters enthusiasm and interest but also helps children integrate more easily into life.

We teach children through various experiential activities to foster independence and tailor our teaching to each child's age. We also hope that parents can apply the lessons taught by the teachers at school to help their children develop independence at home.

According to experts, establishing good habits for children is crucial. From the age of 1.5 to 2 years old, children are aware of their surroundings and want to do everything themselves. Instinctively, as children grow older, their independence increases, and family education is a vital factor in shaping these habits. Therefore, a reasonable and appropriate plan is needed to help children become independent in the most enjoyable way possible.

According to Dr. Vu Thanh Chau, a psychologist and professional advisor at the NewLife Life Skills Education Center (Lao Cai City): To become mature and independent, children must have self-discipline. This self-discipline starts with the smallest things, such as eating, sleeping, and tidying their living space. Housework is not only necessary for women but also for men, equipping them with essential life skills. Without these skills, children will find it difficult to integrate into society, and will be limited and confused in taking care of themselves and their families.

Each child has a different personality. Depending on the family circumstances and the child's individual personality, parents should adopt appropriate parenting methods. Above all, teaching children independence is a long process that requires parents' patience and support, helping children develop independent habits starting with simple things. The earlier children develop a sense of independence, the easier they adapt and the faster they mature.
