There have been many opinions that the fact that an unofficial organization like Box Office Vietnam (BOVN) compiles box office revenue statistics is baseless and should not be used as a general reference for the entire film industry.

Mr. Nguyen Khanh Duong, founder of BOVN, said that it is normal for a third party to provide statistics; for example, when Forbes announced Elon Musk's revenue, the organization did not know how much money was in Elon Musk's account, but they had a way of calculating based on a lot of public data, and society accepted this way of calculating.

Regarding the accuracy of the revenue of the films announced by BOVN, in an interview with VietNamNet reporter, a famous director of many top-grossing films in Vietnam said that compared to the actual revenue of the films produced by this unit, the statistics of BOVN only differ by about 10%. Here, the revenue figure of the statistical website will usually be lower, because there are still some theaters that do not sell tickets online, so it cannot be checked. The most obvious thing is that Tran Thanh's films, when announcing revenue, are always higher than BOVN, because taxes cannot be evaded and no one wants to evade, so everyone wants to announce the real number. In addition, when the film producers see that the statistics of the system have a large difference in revenue, they will also contact the website to make appropriate adjustments.

"In fact, BOVN's announcement of film revenue does not affect the films much and the announced numbers are for reference only," said this representative.

However, another director said that BOVN's revenue statistics for films produced by this unit differ by up to 35-40%. BOVN is an unofficial unit, so the producer does not care about these statistics.

VietNamNet reporters also conducted a test check of the revenue of Tran Thanh's two previous films as director, "Nha Ba Nu" and "Bo Gia". The results showed that the film "Nha Ba Nu", according to BOVN, had a revenue of 460 billion VND, while the producer announced it was 475 billion VND; the film "Bo Gia" on the system had a revenue of 395 billion VND, but the producer announced it was 427 billion VND.

Regarding BOVN scanning information about movie revenue in theater systems in Vietnam, Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai Hoa, CEO of Galaxy Studio, told VietNamNet : Currently, this website is automatically collecting information from the ticket sales website of Galaxy theater chain and has not asked for permission. At the same time, with BOVN, after collecting data, introducing a business model by selling packages to individuals and businesses, this unit must take responsibility on the basis of complying with the provisions of the law and being coordinated by State agencies.

Meanwhile, a representative of the CGV cinema system also shared that the system does not know how independent box office statistics units collect ticket sales data of cinema systems in Vietnam. Regarding information on CGV's revenue, this is confidential information of the enterprise and this unit does not provide it to third parties, unless requested by a State management agency.

There is also one thing that Mr. Nguyen Khanh Duong, founder of BOVN, shared. That is, he was once invited to work by a film unit that reported to the police. Specifically, in 2019, when a Tet film with actress Ngoc Trinh participated in acting, when disagreeing with the figures published by BOVN, this unit did not contact to change the figures but reported directly to the police agency. However, after being invited to work, the police only exchanged information and no further problems arose.

Lesson 3: Theaters can sue Box Office Vietnam for copyright infringement

The truth about the revenue of more than 400 billion VND of the movie "Mai" was announced by Box Office Vietnam . By the afternoon of February 22, the revenue of the movie "Mai" on Box Office Vietnam had exceeded 410 billion VND. So how is this revenue calculated?
Did the theaters crash their websites to increase the popularity of the movies 'Mai', 'Dao, Pho and Piano'? This is a question that many people are asking in the context of Vietnamese movies like "Dao, Pho and Piano" and "Mai" paralyzing the websites of many theater systems.
