According to the report just released today (September 24) by the General Department of Customs, in the first 8 months of 2024, Vietnam recorded 39/53 groups of goods with an import value of over 1 billion USD, an increase of 1 group compared to the same period in 2023 .
In particular, there are two groups of imported goods with large values: computers, electronic products and components reaching 69.24 billion USD; machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts reaching 31.36 billion USD.
Foreign currency expenditure alone to import these two largest commodity groups exceeded 100 billion USD, compared to the same period last year, the foreign currency expenditure increased by 19.5 billion USD.

Specifically, in the past 8 months, Vietnam imported machinery, equipment and electronic products mainly from the following markets: China reached 18.43 billion USD, up 29.2%; South Korea reached 3.68 billion USD, up 1.3%; Japan reached 2.54 billion USD, down 4.1% compared to the same period last year.
The import value from these three markets alone reached 24.65 billion USD, accounting for 36.5% of the country's import value of this group of goods.
Meanwhile, imports of machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts to Vietnam in the first 8 months of 2024 from China reached 18.43 billion USD, up 29.2%, equivalent to an increase of 4.17 billion USD; followed by the Korean market with 3.68 billion USD, up 1.3%, equivalent to an increase of 45 million USD .
In addition to the two largest import groups mentioned above, some groups of goods with import turnover increasing compared to the same period include textile materials, iron and steel, plastic materials, etc.
For example, in the first 8 months of 2024, the country's total import volume of iron and steel of all kinds reached 10.75 million tons with a value of 7.91 billion USD, a sharp increase of 35.5% in volume and 20.9% in value.
Imports of iron and steel of all kinds from China increased sharply to 7.23 million tons, up 59.3% (equivalent to an increase of 2.69 million tons); from Japan to 1.34 million tons, up 5.6% (equivalent to an increase of 71,000 tons); from South Korea to 786,000 tons, up 11.9% (equivalent to an increase of 83,000 tons); from Taiwan to 597,000 tons, up 21.5% (equivalent to an increase of 106,000 tons) over the same period last year.
The import value of raw materials and accessories for the textile, garment, leather and footwear industry reached 18.03 billion USD, up 14.6% (equivalent to an increase of 2.3 billion USD) over the same period last year.

Imports of chemicals and chemical products reached 10.71 billion USD, up 7.3% over the same period in 2023, equivalent to an increase of 732 million USD.
The largest markets supplying chemicals and chemical products to Vietnam in the first 8 months of 2024 were China with 4.35 billion USD, an increase of 216 million USD; South Korea with 968 million USD, an increase of 132 million USD; and Japan with 746 million USD, an increase of 31 million USD.
In addition, the import value of base metals and products in the first 8 months of 2024 reached 8.32 billion USD, an increase of 31.4% (equivalent to an increase of 1.99 billion USD) over the same period last year.
Base metals and products imported into Vietnam mainly came from China with 3.38 billion USD, an increase of 837 million USD and accounting for 40% of the import value of this group of goods nationwide.
Thus, in the first 8 months of 2024, the total value of Vietnam's imported goods reached 246.87 billion USD, an increase of 18.1% over the same period last year. In terms of scale, imported goods in the first 8 months of 2024 increased by 37.8 billion USD over the same period last year.
