Over 60 years of dedication and half a century of marriage

Meritorious Artist Bao Quoc was born into a family with an artistic tradition. He is the 6th son in the Thanh Minh - Thanh Nga cai luong family (one of the 5 most famous cai luong troupes in Saigon from 1950 to 1972).

Since the age of 10, Bao Quoc had the opportunity to be exposed to the stage and was taught and passed on experience by talented artists of the golden generation of reformed opera. During the 1980s and 1990s, Bao Quoc was a famous leading actor on the reformed opera stage, loved by audiences.

When the male artist switched to comedy, his career continued to reap great success. He was considered "the number one comedian in the South", winning many awards in the field of comedy.

Bao Quoc's most memorable moment was when he played the role of the Jade Emperor in the popular drama show "In the House and Outside the Street" of Ho Chi Minh City Television (1990s).

Besides his career, he is also admired for his happy marriage with his wife Thu Thuy. Up to now, the artist couple has been together for 55 years and has 4 children together.

For many years, Bao Quoc and his wife have settled in the US. Every morning, the artist keeps the habit of kissing his wife, then exercising together, walking around the house, and having breakfast. "Life is very simple, but we are happy to have each other," Ms. Thu Thuy shared in an interview in 2022.

Talking about their marriage journey, Bao Quoc's wife described it as a "miraculous" time. Living together inevitably leads to conflicts, but the couple always maintains the principle of "being on good terms", not saying harsh words to each other.

No matter how much they argued or disagreed, artist Bao Quoc and his wife never thought of leaving their home or each other. Through many ups and downs, the couple always treated each other sweetly like a "honeymoon".

On the occasion of their 55th wedding anniversary in March, Meritorious Artist Bao Quoc shared that the secret to keeping a marriage together is sincerity. "Only when a couple truly loves each other can they maintain happiness for so long. If I tried to keep it together but she didn't, it wouldn't work. Luckily, we both love each other," he said.

Bao Quoc said that when he was young, he was too busy with work and was often away from home. He felt guilty because that was a time when he "felt guilty" towards his wife. Later, he realized that "there is no audience like his wife".

"I was lucky when I started working in the arts to have a wife who took care of the housework and raised the children. She was very good so I didn't have to worry about anything. I remember when I was young, it was very difficult to earn money. Even though I performed and sang a lot, I couldn't afford to support a family of 5-6 people. But she still endured silently, taking care of everything so that today we have a very stable life," the male artist recounted.

74 years old, safe after serious illness

After many years of hard work in the arts, Meritorious Artist Bao Quoc has accumulated a considerable amount of assets. In particular, his family also does real estate business, with enough income to live comfortably in his old age.

At the age of 74, Bao Quoc enjoys a peaceful life, spending most of his time with his family. After a serious illness with 3 major surgeries to remove a tumor in his liver, for more than a year now the artist has been in good health and radiant.

After the surgery, Bao Quoc had to take medicine every day and have a health check-up every 3 months. He also suffered from some old age diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol... so he paid a lot of attention to maintaining his health and diet.

Artists are carefully taken care of in every meal by their wife Thu Thuy. "If being a doctor is difficult, then having a wife is ten times more difficult," artist Bao Quoc once shared.

In August, Meritorious Artist Bao Quoc discovered he had liver problems, was hospitalized, had to cancel his ticket to Vietnam, and postponed his participation in artist Minh Canh's show. Currently, his health is stable, although he is thinner than before.

Over the years, artists have worked to relieve their old age, without the pressure of running shows to earn money. In an interview with Dan Tri reporter in 2022, Meritorious Artist Bao Quoc said he occasionally returns to Vietnam to perform to satisfy his personal passion because "cai luong is in my blood".

After a long career, Bao Quoc is concerned about maintaining the bright lights of Cai Luong stages, how to make Cai Luong "survive" in the era of many modern art forms. He is happy that some of his shows are still supported by the audience.

In an interview earlier this year, Bao Quoc shared his views on the awarding of titles: "I was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist in 1991, more than 30 years ago. This is just an assessment, I accept whatever is given, I am very happy because this is a very noble title for an artist to achieve."

Previously, in an interview in July 2011, when asked why Bao Quoc did not apply for the title of People's Artist, he frankly said: "Why do artists have to declare their achievements and apply for the title of People's Artist? My self-respect does not allow me to do that, because it would be very damaging to the artist's honor if I was not considered for the title.

The title of Meritorious Artist and People's Artist conferred by the State is very noble for artists. If I am conferred, I accept it, but if I ask for it, I don't."

Artist Bao Quoc was born in 1949, from Tay Ninh . He is the half-brother of the legendary cai luong artist Thanh Nga.

Bao Quoc's name reached its peak in the 1980s and 1990s, making his mark in a series of roles such as Chuong Hau in Tieng Trong Me Linh , Bui Kiem in Kieu Nguyet Nga , Hai Xien in the play Ban Tho To mot co dao , Y "xi ke" in Shadow and light ...
