Trial of fishermen brutally tortured with pliers in Ca Mau

On the morning of September 7, Tran Van Thoi District People's Court held a trial in the case of fisherman Truong Van Trung (48 years old, permanent resident of Hamlet 18, An Minh Bac Commune, Minh Thuong District, Kien Giang) who was brutally tortured with pliers, causing 48% injury.

The defendants in the case include: Tran Cong Toan (37 years old, also known as To), Doan Van Tac (41 years old, also known as Doan Van Hung), Su Chi Tam (27 years old, all residing in Song Doc Town, Tran Van Thoi District), Nguyen Van Ty (34 years old, residing in Khanh Loc Commune, Tran Van Thoi District), Nguyen Van Cua (32 years old, residing in Khanh Hai Commune, Tran Van Thoi District). All 5 defendants were prosecuted for torturing others and intentionally causing injury.

The defendants who brutally tortured fisherman Truong Van Trung were brought to court by the police.

"Hit him for me, I'll take the blame"

According to the indictment, on January 4, 2022, fishing boat BT 97993 - TS (female boat) captained by Tran Cong Toan and fishing boat BT 93599 - TS (male boat) captained by Mr. TT (residing in Ben Tre), departed from Song Doc estuary (Tran Van Thoi district). Both boats were owned by Ms. Pham Thi Ha (Toan's mother).

On the fishing boat captained by Toan, there were 6 people including Truong Van Trung, Doan Van Tac, Nguyen Van Cua, Nguyen Van Ty, Su Chi Tam and Nguyen Van Hung (Hung had been there for a while, then Le Van Binh replaced Hung and went ashore). The fishing boat captained by Mr. TT had only 1 fisherman named Cuong.

Mr. Trung and lawyer Ho Nguyen Le, the lawyer who provided him with free legal support.

During the fishing process at sea, seeing that Mr. Truong Van Trung was not doing his job well, Toan reminded him many times but Mr. Trung still did not improve. After that, Toan contacted a person named BL (a broker who hired fishermen to go to sea in Song Doc town) and asked to send someone else to replace Mr. Trung. However, Mr. BL did not agree.

Toan was angry and vented his anger on Mr. Trung by ordering the people on the ship: "From now on, if Trung can't do anything or breaks anything, beat him for me, I will take responsibility for anything." After receiving Toan's order, Doan Van Tac, Nguyen Van Ty, Nguyen Van Cua, and Su Chi Tam repeatedly beat and brutally tortured Mr. Truong Van Trung.

Use pliers to break the victim's 4 teeth

The indictment also listed that between the beginning of February and the end of May 2022, Mr. Trung was beaten 12 times.

The last time Mr. Trung was beaten was around the end of May 2022. That day, after returning from a drinking party, Toan saw Tac, Ty, and Cua also drinking, while Tam was lying on a hammock. Toan told Mr. Trung and Le Van Binh (who had replaced Mr. Nguyen Van Hung to return to shore earlier - PV) to lie face down in the engine room and then told Tac, Ty, and Cua to beat Mr. Trung and Binh.

Not satisfied yet, Toan ordered Tac to use pliers to break Mr. Trung's teeth. Hearing Toan's order, Ty took the pliers and gave them to Tac to break Mr. Trung's two lower molars. Next, Cua used the pliers to break two more lower molars of Mr. Trung; and Ty used the pliers to break one of Binh's teeth.

On May 30, 2022, Toan saw that Mr. Trung had many injuries on his body, so he let Mr. Trung and Binh hitch a ride on another boat to shore. After reaching shore, Mr. Trung and Binh reported to the local authorities to make a record.

Afterwards, the Tran Van Thoi District Police Department investigated and prosecuted Tran Cong Toan, Doan Van Tac, Su Chi Tam, Nguyen Van Ty, and Nguyen Van Cua. All five defendants confessed to their crimes of torturing and beating, breaking teeth, and causing injuries to Mr. Trung and Binh.

This morning, Mr. Trung attended the trial with his son and younger brother. Talking to Thanh Nien reporter , fisherman Truong Van Trung, who was brutally tortured by his fellow boatmen, said he hopes the trial will deal with the right person for the right crime.
