Applying for university admission in 2024: Things to note to avoid regrets

After knowing the 2024 high school graduation exam scores, candidates have nearly 2 weeks to register and adjust their university admission wishes on the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) system. The time starts from July 18 and lasts until 5:00 p.m. on July 30.

Sending advice to candidates, MSc. Tran Nam, Head of Student Affairs Department, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University, emphasized the need to research information before choosing a major.

According to him, this is an important issue, candidates should not choose a major without fully understanding it.

"My advice is that you must really love the industry and future career, and have the appropriate learning ability. You must understand the industry," Mr. Nam expressed.

According to him, for a long time, the training programs of the industry have been announced on the websites of faculties and schools so that candidates can learn about the programs, training roadmaps, and other necessary information when choosing.

In addition to the curriculum, students need to pay attention to related information such as: Student activities, scientific research, international exchanges, scholarships... to better understand the faculty and major they will choose to study.

Another issue that should not be overlooked is tuition and living expenses. At Ho Chi Minh City National University, students will be given maximum conditions to stay in dormitories. Master Tran Nam believes that understanding these things will help students make wise choices.

Sharing the same opinion, MSc. Ngo Tri Dung, Director of Admissions and Communications Center, Hong Bang International University (HIU) emphasized the need to clearly identify one's favorite career.

Introducing the "Be a Hiuer" Experience Day taking place at HIU, Mr. Dung said that this is an event organized by the school to guide candidates in registering their wishes.

At the same time, it helps candidates once again clearly identify the most suitable and favorite career, thereby making the right decision for their priority wishes.

He encouraged students to directly participate in events organized by the university to better understand the environment they will be working in for the next 4-5 years. In addition, students also have the opportunity to experience reality, meet with lecturers to share a series of questions surrounding their majors, future careers and receive many attractive gifts and scholarships.

Balance of previous years' benchmarks

After determining their favorite career, candidates begin to choose their desired university based on their scores and the school's admission scores from previous years.

Dr. Tran Khac Thac, Head of Training Department, Thuyloi University, said that according to statistics, the average score of high school graduation exam is quite high, however, the average standard score of universities, if increased, will only increase by 1-1.5 points depending on the major.

The reason is that the schools' quotas are high while the number of candidates applying for university admission is moderate. Following the current trend of shifting education, many students choose to study abroad or work in other fields.

As for Thuyloi University, the predicted benchmark score will only fluctuate around the same as in 2023.

"According to the admission principle, students should put the major they like in their first choice," said Mr. Thac.

MSc. Tran Nam also commented that without the virtual filtering results, no one will be able to give the exact benchmark score for 2024. Therefore, all opinions will be for reference only, candidates should consider before making their wishes.

Candidates should note that the more candidates choose their major, the higher the admission score will be, and the higher the average score of the high school graduation exam, the higher the admission score will be. Therefore, candidates can refer to the school's admission score in the last 3 years.

"You should choose many wishes to minimize risks when applying," Master Tran Nam advised.

Register to ensure admission

MSc. Ngo Tri Dung instructed that according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, from July 18 to 5:00 p.m. on July 30, candidates can register, adjust, and add admission wishes an unlimited number of times.

Each candidate is only admitted to the highest choice among the registered choices, so candidates should choose carefully to register for the first choice.

"When arranging your wishes, you need to determine which major and school you want to study the most, then prioritize your first wish, and do so in order until you finish all your wishes.

For candidates who are admitted early to the school, just put the conditional admission wish to the school in the first position, then university admission is definitely within reach," added Master Ngo Tri Dung.

When registering for a wish, candidates check the information and make adjustments if there are any errors. Candidates need to see the list of wishes that are eligible for admission. If the candidate has a wish that is eligible for admission, the system will display the default on the screen for the candidate to choose a wish.

In case the candidate does not have a wish that meets the admission requirements, the system will display a screen to add a wish by entering the order of wishes - school code - major code and confirm registration.

From July 28 to August 3, candidates pay admission fees according to the number of wishes online according to the instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training.

No later than 5:00 p.m. on August 19, universities and colleges will announce the benchmark scores and results of the first round of admission. Candidates who are admitted must confirm their admission on the system before August 28.
