Tam An (real name is Luu Nguyen Tram Anh, 23 years old, currently living and working in Ho Chi Minh City) made her friends admire when she made Nhat Binh shirts with wool by hand in the past two months.

Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online , Tam An said that she wanted to make this shirt to promote the image of Vietnamese traditional costumes to the international knitting community. The Nhat Binh shirt was made from 10 rolls of Alize Diva wool with a 2.5mm crochet hook.

The girl who loves crocheting shared that Alize Diva is a high-gloss acrylic yarn, so she wanted to use it to make the overall shirt as smooth as possible. The shirt is made based on the double crochet technique in a pentagon shape, creating two parts: the sleeves and the body of the shirt. The water wave motifs and the collar are hand-sewn. The phoenix nest, crane and bird motifs on the shirt are heat-printed.

Previously, Tam An had bought a modernized Nhat Binh shirt. She used it as a reference for the size, collar position, and sleeve length.

The young girl spent two months working on it, hoping that when people see her work, they will feel the love of young people for Vietnamese traditional costumes, always trying to spread and protect traditional values and national identity in today's sea of information.

“Before that, I used to make Ao Dai with wool. However, when making Ao Nhat Binh, my emotions were still overflowing when I made a product with my own hands that was imbued with national identity. Not only did it challenge my own skills, this product also made me proud when I was able to weave a picture of national pride with each crochet stitch.

This work is not simply wool and thread. It also symbolizes the resilience and creativity of the Vietnamese people as well as the efforts of young people in preserving culture and promoting the image of Vietnam through traditional costumes to international friends," said Tam An.

Crochet for love, to relieve stress

Tam An said that some people think that making sweaters from wool is meaningless, just for show, and has no economic value. Wool is not as useful as other fabrics, and the crocheter has to spend a lot of time to complete it…

However, Tam An believes that crochet is a very enjoyable sport. Players can easily customize it to their liking and unleash their creativity. Crochet is also a way to protect the environment. When you spend time making an item, you certainly won’t want to throw it away after 2-3 wears like regular manufactured fashion items.

“I started learning crochet on YouTube when I was 10 years old. At that time, I simply wanted to make a keychain for my classmates. However, now I use crochet as a therapy to relieve stress in life. Every time I crochet, I can put everything aside and focus on each stitch to complete the work. As long as I put in the effort to research, learn and have patience, there is almost nothing I can't do,” she said.

In addition to clothes, Tam An also makes many other items for herself and others such as hats, handbags, teddy bears, etc.

The girl aspires to make many products imbued with national identity in the future to contribute to stimulating the interest of young people in Vietnamese costumes. Thereby, encouraging other friends to make their own version, as well as spreading the understanding of Vietnamese costumes to international friends.
