In an interview with Sky News last week, Mr Prystaiko was asked about outgoing British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace saying Kiev should show more gratitude for arms transfers from its allies in its conflict with Russia.

The issue was raised in the context of Mr. Zelenskyy's tense statements about the West's failure to approve Ukraine's membership in NATO, which made some allied countries unhappy.

Mr Zelenskyy responded to Mr Wallace's comments by saying Ukraine had always been grateful to the UK, a loyal ally, and said "we can wake up in the morning and express our gratitude to the minister".

Asked if Mr Zelenskyy was being sarcastic, Mr Prystaiko told Sky there was "a bit of irony" in the Ukrainian president "saying that every morning when he wakes up he calls Ben Wallace to thank him".

Mr Zelenskyy’s decree did not indicate who would replace Mr Prystaiko, 53, an experienced diplomat and former deputy prime minister of Ukraine, as well as Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK for the past three years.
