Chinese media reported that former Prime Minister Li Keqiang passed away in Shanghai at 0:10 on October 27 after a heart attack.
"Comrade Li Keqiang, while resting in Shanghai in recent days, suffered a sudden heart attack on October 26. Despite the efforts of the medical team to save him, he passed away in Shanghai at 0:10 a.m. on October 27," China's CCTV reported.
CCTV added that the obituary will be released later.
Li Keqiang was born in 1955 and grew up in Anhui Province, eastern China. He graduated from Peking University with a law degree and a doctorate in economics.
After joining the Communist Party of China, Li Keqiang quickly demonstrated his leadership ability and held the positions of Party Secretary of Henan and Liaoning provinces before becoming a member of the Politburo Standing Committee, Vice Premier of the State Council, and then Prime Minister.
Mr. Li Keqiang was elected as China's premier for the first time in 2013 and re-elected in 2018, playing an important role in running the world's second largest economy. In terms of economic policies, he is considered to be sharp, decisive, professional and ready to face challenges.
At the end of 2022, Mr. Li Keqiang was one of four members of the 19th Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China whose name was not on the list of members of the 20th Central Committee. Mr. Li Keqiang confirmed earlier this year: "This is my last year as prime minister."
At its session in March this year, the Chinese parliament elected Mr. Li Qiang, 63 years old, as the new Prime Minister, succeeding Mr. Li Keqiang.
