Former Prime Minister Thaksin, 74, returned to Thailand on August 22, 2023 and was immediately sentenced to eight years in prison. However, less than a day after returning to the country, the former Thai Prime Minister suffered serious health problems and has since been transferred to the Bangkok Metropolitan Police Hospital for treatment.
In late August 2023, Thaksin’s prison sentence was reduced to just one year under a royal pardon decree. Accordingly, the former Thai Prime Minister will serve half of his prison sentence on February 18 and is eligible to be considered for serving the rest of his sentence outside traditional prison facilities.
The review was carried out based on new regulations issued by the Department of Corrections, Ministry of Justice of Thailand since December last year to reduce overcrowding in prisons and in line with international standards.
