Secretary of the Thai House of Representatives Apat Sukkhanand read out the King's assent at a ceremony in Bangkok. Paetongtarn Shinawatra's father, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was also present at the ceremony.
“As the head of the government, I will work with the parliament with an open heart, listening to opinions to help develop the country. I hope to combine the strength of all generations, all talented people in Thailand - from the cabinet, the coalition, civil servants, the private sector and the people,” Ms. Paetongtarn said after the ceremony.
Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra and her father Thaksin Shinawatra appeared at the ceremony approving her as prime minister on August 18.
At the age of 38, Ms. Paetongtarn officially became the youngest prime minister in Thailand's history, after being elected by the majority of the Thai House of Representatives on August 16. She was elected to replace Mr. Srettha Thavisin, who was recently dismissed by the Thai Constitutional Court.
After receiving royal approval, she hugged her father Thaksin and other family members. Ms Paetongtarn said she had no intention of appointing her father to any government position but would listen to his advice. The policies of the new Prime Minister Paetongtarn government will be presented to parliament in September.
Ms. Paetongtarn has never held a government position before and is expected to face many challenges during her tenure. In her first press conference, the new Thai prime minister said she would continue the policies of her predecessor Srettha, including boosting the economy, dealing with illegal drugs, improving the health care system and promoting gender diversity, according to the Bangkok Post .
Ms Paetongtarn bumped fists with her predecessor Srettha Thavisin.
