Former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi
The Inquirer reported on January 17 that a court in Pakistan has just indicted former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi on charges that their 2018 marriage violated a rule that requires a woman to wait three months before remarrying.
Mr Khan's lawyer Intisar Panjutha said his client denied the charges and said it was one of several politically motivated cases aimed at ousting him from next month's general election.
Ms Bibi was previously married to Mr Khawar Maneka, who said they divorced in November 2017, less than three months before she married Mr Khan on January 1, 2018.
However, Ms Bibi confirmed that she divorced Mr Maneka in August 2017.
Mr Khan was married to Jemima Goldsmith in 1995 and divorced in 2004. He then married Reham Khan in 2014 and divorced a year later.
The former prime minister and his current wife, Bibi, have both denied violating a provision in Islamic law that requires women to wait three months after divorce before remarrying. The provision is enshrined in Pakistani law.
When the indictment was served at Adiala Prison in Rawalpindi on January 16, Mr Khan denied the charges. Ms Bibi was not present but had previously denied the charges.
Mr Khan lost his post after a confidence vote in parliament in April 2022. In August 2023, he was sentenced to three years in prison for illegally selling gifts while in office.
He is also charged in more than 150 other cases, including inciting violence after his arrest in May 2023. The violence then led to the Supreme Court of Pakistan deciding to release him.
