Half a century ago, in the 1970s, when Vietnam was still in the fierce stage of the war to protect independence and unify the country, Vietnam received solidarity, strong support and encouragement from Argentina, the South American land on the other side of the hemisphere, with people with progressive thinking striving to build a peaceful world without war.
Stemming from the common aspiration for independence, democracy, freedom and for the benefit of the people, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Government of the Republic of Argentina officially established diplomatic relations on October 25, 1973, an important milestone in Vietnam-Argentina relations, making Argentina one of the first three countries in Latin America to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam.
New step in bilateral relations
With the inauguration of the Vietnamese Embassy in Argentina in 1995 and the Argentine Embassy in Vietnam in 1997, the two sides have made continuous efforts to create cooperation opportunities for bilateral relations and enhance understanding between the two peoples.
At the same time, with the shared values and traditions of national independence, the similarity in the goals of national construction and development, and the common aspiration to promote peace, cooperation and development, our two countries have nurtured that good relationship of friendship and cooperation over the past 50 years with many important marks and results.
Overcoming the ups and downs of history, the two countries have accompanied each other in the process of building and developing their countries. After nearly 40 years of implementing the Doi Moi process, Vietnam has achieved many great and comprehensive achievements, constantly improving its position in the region and internationally, as General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong assessed, "Never before has Vietnam had such a foundation, potential, position and international prestige as it does today."
For their part, the Government and people of Argentina have been constantly promoting the spirit of creative labor, striving to build their country into a country with a leading role in the region, with the third largest economy in Latin America in terms of scale and a member of the G20 group, with a developed science with 3 Nobel Prizes in medicine and chemistry...
I am pleased to see that the two countries have continued to coordinate in building and developing political and diplomatic relations on the basis of solidarity, good friendship and mutual support, demonstrated through visits by high-ranking leaders of the two countries, most recently the visit to Vietnam by President Mauricio Macri in February 2019 and the visit to Argentina by National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue in April 2023. The historic visit of a Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman after 18 years to Argentina has marked a new step forward in bilateral relations, especially in the context of the two countries celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations and 13 years of Comprehensive Partnership.
Thereby, affirming that Vietnam attaches importance to Argentina, one of Vietnam's leading important partners in the Latin American region, and wishes the two countries to strengthen substantive and effective cooperation, with many breakthrough measures towards building a strategic partnership framework by field in the coming time.

Unity is the key
In addition, during the period of 2020 - 2022, the Covid-19 pandemic broke out globally, showing us that solidarity is the core factor to overcome difficulties and challenges, with the two countries supporting each other with 500,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine from Argentina and 20,000 masks from Vietnam. This has contributed to strengthening the bond, sharing and increasing trust between the people and the two countries.
In terms of politics, in addition to synchronously implementing cooperation mechanisms such as the Political Consultation between the two Foreign Ministries and the Intergovernmental Cooperation Committee on Economics, Trade and Investment, parliamentary cooperation... the two countries continue to coordinate closely and effectively at multilateral forums and international organizations, such as the United Nations, FEALAC, South-South cooperation...
The two sides shared the view that disputes over sovereignty and territory should be resolved by peaceful means, on the basis of international law. In terms of economy, with Argentina being Vietnam's third largest trading partner in Latin America and Vietnam being Argentina's fifth largest export market, the two sides still have much potential to expand cooperation, enhance business activities to promote two-way trade turnover to exceed 4.8 billion USD in 2022, towards early initiation of negotiations on the Vietnam-MERCOSUR Free Trade Agreement.
With the will of the Leaders and the support and response of the people of the two countries, I fully believe that the two sides will promote the inherent traditional spirit of solidarity, the sacred values shared in the cause of protecting and building the country to continue writing new and increasingly beautiful pages of the history of Vietnam-Argentina relations.
