(Dan Tri) - According to a report from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST), the Cinema Department did not allow the distribution of 15 foreign feature films and 1 Vietnamese feature film last year.

On December 18, the online conference to summarize the work in 2024 and deploy key tasks in 2025 of the culture, sports and tourism sector with the theme Building an advanced culture with strong national identity - The driving force for national development in the new era - The era of the Vietnamese people's rise took place in Hanoi and other connecting points.

At the event, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism provided a report on the work and tasks of the culture, sports and tourism sector in 2024.

The movie "Barbie" was banned in Vietnam because it contained images of the illegal "cow tongue line" (Photo: Heyday Films).

According to the report, the Cinema Department has implemented a plan to release and popularize the pilot release of Dao, Pho and Piano, Hong Ha Nu Si and 6 other animated films with a revenue of 25 billion VND. Of which, Dao, Pho and Piano earned 23 billion VND, the other films earned 2 billion VND.

The Department continues to implement the Cinema Law and detailed regulations, strengthen film management in cyberspace, gradually put film classification and dissemination activities into order, organize and participate in prestigious domestic and international film festivals.

The Cinema Department has provided filming services using locations in Vietnam. Received and evaluated 17 animation scripts and 15 feature film scripts.

Received 96 documentary and scientific film scripts, reviewed 87 documentary and scientific film scripts assigned and ordered by the State.

In addition, the Department granted classification licenses to 205 foreign feature films, 26 Vietnamese feature films, 47 documentaries, 2 scientific films, 22 animated films, 6 short films, 364 films participating in film festivals, specialized film festivals, thematic film festivals, film competitions, film programs, and film weeks in Vietnam and abroad.

This year, the Cinema Department did not grant permission to distribute 15 foreign feature films and 1 Vietnamese feature film. The common reasons are that the films contain images of the nine-dash line or violent scenes.

This year, the Department of Cinema inspected the content and classification of 178 films (1,325 episodes), assessed 12 dossiers, and recognized 10 businesses as qualified to classify popular films on cyberspace.

The Department also requested the removal of 13 popular films on the internet.

Previously, at the regular press conference of the first quarter of 2024 of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, when asked about many nonsense films and films with the "cow tongue line" image being shown online, Mr. Vi Kien Thanh - former Director of the Department of Cinema - said that according to current regulations, only films shown in theaters are allowed to be made under the pre-control regime (with a licensing review board before being released).

As for movies shown on the internet, they are subject to post-auditing, with distributors responsible for classifying movies and displaying warnings to viewers.

"The Cinema Department only has 10 people in charge of controlling movies online, and all of them are part-time workers. Every day, there are 2 shifts, each shift has 5 people, so it is impossible to watch everything," said Mr. Thanh.

Regarding the film discovered to have inserted images of the illegal nine-dash line, Mr. Thanh affirmed that the management agency will take immediate measures to prevent it.

In July 2023, Netflix and FPT Play (web and mobile versions) officially removed the movie Flight to you, and the movie Barbie was also banned from showing in Vietnam due to containing images of the illegal "cow tongue line".

In March 2022 , Uncharted was also banned from theaters for the same reason.

In December 2019, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism fined the distributor CGV 170 million VND because the film Abominable ( Everest: The Little Yeti ) contained an image of the "cow tongue line" map. Before being withdrawn from theaters, this work had been licensed and shown for 10 days.
