Along with other crops, lotus has helped change the lives of local people, while also creating a peaceful landscape of a mountainous countryside in Lang Son.
At this time, lotus growers in the commune are entering the harvest season. According to the people, growing lotus requires less care and brings higher economic efficiency than other crops. Lotus roots are easy to sell, so people are very confident in cultivating them.
Digging lotus roots is quite hard work. The digger needs to be skillful to ensure that the lotus roots after being dug out of the mud layer are still intact, not scratched or broken.
It is known that people in Hoa Cu commune mainly grow white lotus because this variety produces delicious tubers and is more productive than other types of lotus. After about 5 months of planting and caring, the plant can harvest tubers sporadically from the beginning of July to the end of December every year.
According to locals, each person can usually dig up 10 to 15 kg of lotus root per day. After digging up the lotus root, locals wash it through the mud before taking it home.
To prevent lotus roots from being scratched, leading to dark spots, bad appearance, and reduced cost, people often use self-woven bamboo baskets to hold them during transportation.
In addition to being a nutritious food supplement, in Oriental medicine, lotus root is also considered a medicine used to treat many diseases. Lotus root contains many vitamins, minerals and other beneficial nutrients that help blood circulation, are good for the heart, and are anti-oxidants...
As soon as they are transported home, people will classify the large and small lotus roots and wash them thoroughly with water. This task takes a lot of time because people have to carefully and meticulously scrub each lotus root segment clean.
Along with that, people cut off the damaged and excess parts of the lotus root. After thoroughly cleaning, the old lotus roots will have a brownish white color. The young lotus roots will be white.
Currently, the lotus root consumption market is not only limited to retail sales at markets in Lang Son city such as Gieng Vuong, Ky Lua, Dong Kinh... but also purchased by traders to sell in neighboring provinces such as Bac Ninh, Cao Bang... With prices ranging from 30 to 40 thousand VND/kg, many households growing lotus roots in Hoa Cu commune have had additional income and improved their lives.
