300 billion VND copyright boost raises V.League level

V.League makes money

Before 2022, V.League television copyright is still a vague concept. It is not that the tournament does not make money from the exploitation of broadcasting rights by the TV stations. However, the conversion value for nearly 200 matches of a Vietnamese professional football season is not as expected by VPF leaders or clubs.

Looking back at the period from 2016 to 2022, the old partner owning the television copyright of VPF is fully responsible for production and live broadcasting on internet and television infrastructure in exchange for the television copyright. This is a type of "exchange - return" cooperation, VPF is entitled to exploit advertising on television.

By 2018, when the new board of directors took over, VPF Company was paid an additional cash amount of about 2 billion VND per season by this partner. Indeed, that number is very modest, if put on the scale with the investment level of 50-60 billion VND/year that a club spends to operate for the whole season.

VPF fully understands that the number is still modest. However, the unit accepts and considers the cooperation between the two sides to be suitable for the actual context to gradually develop and spread the image of the tournament. However, over time, with the constant development of modern society, the development of social networks and the diversification of television platforms, the image of V.League is also spread on many mass media.

That means the value of V.League is also multiplied. The clubs themselves are also calling for a revolutionary change in television copyright in V.League. And the cooperation between VPF and FPT Play is considered a step to create momentum for the development of national professional tournaments.

60 billion/season. 300 billion/5 years. That number is indeed a big leverage, if compared to the previous period when television copyright was only a conversion. V.League really started to make money. More importantly, the value of V.League is seen at a larger level. That is the premise for the next negotiations in the near future, revolving around exploiting television copyright of the number 1 tournament in Vietnam.

"The three-legged stool" creates stability for V.League

Not only television copyright, VPF and FPT are strategic partners, coordinating in all matters related to commercial exploitation and image development. FPT Play also commits that the value will increase every year, along with promoting better live match production standards, ensuring that all matches in the national professional football tournament system are broadcast live, diversifying media content for the tournament...

Clubs – the main factors that make up national professional football leagues – benefit directly financially from what is happening. Developing the image and promoting the tournament also helps participating teams increase their value and attractiveness to investors and advertisers.

VPF no longer has to divide its resources to do non-professional work, it only needs to focus on organizing and developing tournament expertise - the core task and also the strength of this unit. The comprehensive partnership contract between VPF and FPT Play is also a commitment to stability in the future.

The story of V.League television copyright becoming a reality with high stability shows the right development in the macro vision of the unit holding the right to organize the tournament and also shows the remarkable professional development from the football teams to other components that make up the tournament.

Looking at the Thai League, there was a time when the tournament of your country made both insiders and fans envious. But up to this point, we have been and are on the right track with stable development in the long term.

SiamSport – Thailand’s leading prestigious sports newspaper – has released some surprising figures. The Thai League used to cost up to 1.05 billion baht (over 720 billion VND) per season. However, now broadcasters are only willing to pay 1/20 (about 33 billion VND) compared to the golden period of 2017-2020 for the broadcasting rights of the Thai League 2023/24, and 1/6 compared to the previous season. Even the most attractive tournament in Southeast Asia is facing the risk of continuing to be heavily discounted in the future.

Meanwhile, V.League has made a leap forward and for at least the next 5 years, the teams will benefit a lot more. The figure of 60 billion per season may not satisfy the majority and is nothing compared to the financial amount that professional clubs have to spend to maintain their operations, but with a sustainable and stable development orientation with positive numbers, we have the right to believe in the promising future of professional football in our country.
