Number of FDI enterprises reporting losses increases sharply
In the latest report on the performance of the foreign direct investment (FDI) sector, the Ministry of Finance said that the number of foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises reporting losses, accumulated losses, and losses of equity has tended to increase in recent years.
Of the 28,918 FDI enterprises with financial reporting data compiled by the Ministry of Finance in 2023, 16,292 FDI enterprises reported business losses.
Thus, on average, for every 2 FDI enterprises operating in Vietnam, more than 1 FDI enterprise reports investment and business losses.
Besides, the number of FDI enterprises with accumulated losses recorded in the same period was more than 18,100 enterprises, an increase of 15%.
Total losses of FDI enterprises in 2023 are about VND 217,400 billion, an increase of 32%.
And the accumulated loss in 2023 of FDI enterprises will reach more than VND908,200 billion, an increase of 20%.
Notably, the number of FDI enterprises reporting losses in equity in fiscal year 2023 also increased sharply to 5,091 enterprises.
Similarly, the negative equity value of FDI enterprises is about VND 241,560 billion.
Regarding revenue, the Ministry of Finance said that the revenue of FDI enterprises in 2023 will reach more than VND9.4 million billion, a decrease of more than VND426.9 trillion.
The five localities with the largest FDI enterprise revenue are: Ho Chi Minh City (1.4 million billion VND), Bac Ninh (1.2 million billion VND), Dong Nai (749 thousand billion VND), Binh Duong (731 thousand billion VND), Hai Phong (693 thousand billion VND).
Pre-tax profits of FDI enterprises in 2023 are recorded at more than VND 411,700 billion, down about VND 68,300 billion compared to 2022.
Meanwhile, after-tax profits of FDI enterprises were recorded at about VND377,000 billion, down nearly VND63,000 billion.
Debt of FDI enterprises up to 5.7 million billion VND
Regarding the budget payment situation of FDI enterprises in 2023, according to the General Department of Taxation, domestic revenue (excluding crude oil) of FDI enterprises reached nearly VND 238,800 billion, a decrease of about VND 4,600 billion compared to the previous year.
Of which, corporate income tax revenue reached about 120,400 billion VND, value added tax reached about 62,100 billion VND, and special consumption tax reached about 50,800 billion VND.
Also according to the Ministry of Finance, the total assets of 28,918 FDI enterprises reporting in 2023 reached nearly VND9.96 trillion, an increase of 6.8%.
Meanwhile, the equity of FDI enterprises in the same period reached about 4.19 million billion VND, an increase of 5.5%.
Total debt payable by FDI enterprises in the same period was about 5.7 million billion VND, up 7.9% over the same period last year.
The debt-to-equity ratio of FDI enterprises in 2023 is 1.38 times.
FDI investment sectors with high debt-to-equity ratios are finance, banking and insurance activities 3.7 times, information and communication more than 3 times, electricity and gas production and distribution 2.6 times, wholesale and retail 2.2 times.
The Ministry of Finance assesses overall FDI enterprises to ensure solvency.
Losing for many years but still expanding investment?
Commenting on the effectiveness of FDI investment, the Ministry of Finance said that the number of FDI enterprises reporting losses and accumulated losses resulting in loss of equity increased significantly in quantity and capital value.
Many FDI enterprises have reported losses for many consecutive years but still expanded their investment capital and production and business activities.
It is noteworthy that many FDI enterprises with large investment capital in Vietnam, high revenue, large pre-tax profits, but their contribution to the state budget is very low.
