Here are three daily habits Deborah Szekely shares with CNBC Make It that help her stay healthy and happy.
Daily exercise
Szekely tries to walk a mile every day. “ I can’t sleep until I’ve done my walk,” she says. “It’s not a rigid habit, it’s just something that needs to be done, like getting up in the morning .”
She also recommends finding active friends to join you in your daily walk, making it easier to reach your daily activity goals.
Although her walking intensity is lower than when she was younger, it is still effective. Being naturally active through low-intensity physical activities such as walking is a common habit of people who live long.
Limit red meat
Ms. Szekely has been on a plant-based diet since she was a child. “ I prioritized fish and seafood. My parents never forced me to eat meat,” she said. Her eating habits are similar to the Mediterranean diet, which focuses on whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and fish.
The three meals that Mrs. Szekeli usually eats include:
Breakfast: Yogurt, banana and whole grain cereal.
Lunch: There's always a salad when she's at home, but if she eats out with people, she likes to try different foods and doesn't over-restrict.
Dinner: Since she often goes out to eat with friends, Szekely will opt for fish, salad, baked potatoes or try something new.
Always sociable and actively learning
Ms. Szekely's social activities are quite extensive. "I have season tickets to plays at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego. I go to the theater regularly and I love opera," she said.
She also gives lectures at her resort every Wednesday, and interacts with guests several times a week. In addition to her social activities, she is always eager to learn more. Ms. Szekeli speaks four languages and is immersed in different cultures.
