Iran launched retaliatory strikes on the night of April 13 and the morning of April 14, 2024, after a deadly Israeli airstrike killed two Iranian generals earlier this month, pushing the Middle East to the brink of all-out conflict. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had launched "dozens of missiles and more than 100 drones against certain targets inside the occupied territories." Tehran's permanent mission to the United Nations said in a statement that the attack on Israel was in retaliation for the April 1 attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, that killed two Iranian generals. The incident marked the first attack on Israel from Iranian territory. Iran and Israel, though enemies, have never launched a direct and overt attack on each other's territory — although Israel's April 1 attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria took place on what is technically considered Iranian sovereign territory under diplomatic convention.
