Appearing in the show Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law episode 374, the family of Mrs. Pham Thi Dam, Mr. Thach Luc and his wife Ms. Truc (Ba Ria Vung Tau province) brought a touching story.
The youngest of four children, Truc was born a boy. A few years after marrying Thach, she was able to have sex reassignment surgery.
However, right from the beginning when she met him, his whole family opposed her. She said: “Actually, I don’t blame you guys. Because if I were in your shoes, I would probably do the same thing. I just feel sorry for myself because I was born differently from other normal women.”
In the early days, Ms. Truc did not receive acceptance from Mr. Thach Luc's family. She went to his house but did not dare to enter.
Ms. Truc admits that she is good at making money but lazy at housework. However, to win over her husband's family, every time she returns to her hometown, she rushes into doing everything from washing dishes to cleaning the toilet. Her eagerness to learn gradually wins the sympathy of her husband's family members, especially her mother-in-law - who later loves her daughter-in-law very much.
She remembered a memory with her mother-in-law that still brings tears to her eyes when she recalls it. “Back then, we weren’t married yet. After the hair salon space was reclaimed, we had to rent a new salon to work. I remember the rent was 3.5 million a month. My mother gave me 10 million to pay the rent. Back then, we were very poor, after paying the rent, we didn’t have money to buy things. We even had to pour water into shampoo bottles to make them look nice.
At that time, my mother-in-law asked me. I said, we didn't have money to buy things to do. Hearing that, my mother called me aside, gave me 2 taels of gold and said, 'Take it home and sell it to get money to buy things'. I didn't dare accept it from my mother. My mother said, just take it, consider it a loan, and pay me back when you have enough money.
Ms. Truc tearfully confided: “I never thought I would meet such a good mother-in-law in my life. We were married for a year when my mother got sick and passed away.”
The daughter-in-law said that her mother-in-law is someone she always loves and respects. Even when she and her husband had conflicts and did not live together, she still regularly contacted and met her mother-in-law.
Talking about her relationship with her son-in-law, Mrs. Pham Thi Dam, 53 years old, said that her son-in-law is very obedient, loves his wife and children and cares for her. However, to get to where they are today, Mr. Luc and Ms. Truc have also gone through many ups and downs in their 13 years of living together.
Mr. Luc confessed that he used to drink all day and night and was often scolded by Ms. Truc. They had many conflicts. One time, the two of them got into a fight, “a very fierce fight,” Mr. Luc said.
In the morning, he was both sad and ashamed of his wife's family, so he left home and went back to his mother's house for a few months. After that, he went to sea for a whole year.
During this time, Ms. Truc was angry with him and blocked all communication channels. But she still told her husband's family that she was ready to welcome him back if he repented.
After a period of working at sea, Mr. Luc “realized” many things. He knew his mistakes, returned to apologize to his wife and mother-in-law. They both forgave him and the couple has lived in harmony ever since.
"Since he returned, he has changed a lot: he is more enthusiastic about his work, loves his wife and children" - Ms. Truc commented. Now, sitting back and thinking, she also remembers what her mother-in-law told her before she passed away. "My mother told me that when we have conflicts, wait until my husband is sober, and say whatever he wants to say. She said that only if I speak, will he listen, so she trusts me very much and hopes that we will get along and work together."
Before, Mr. Luc was drunk all day, causing frequent conflicts between the couple.
Currently, after overcoming many difficulties, the couple is the owner of a restaurant in Vung Tau City, with a very busy job. However, in return, the family's economy has changed significantly. They have enough financial means to take care of Mrs. Dam. Many times, Truc and her husband have persuaded their mother to stop selling to have time to take care of her health and rest in her old age. But Mrs. Dam refused.
She said she has been selling dried fish at home for many years, has many acquaintances, and earns several hundred thousand dong a day. It would be a waste to quit now. “I am still healthy and can still work. Seeing you guys work so hard, I cannot sit still. When I am weak and can’t work, I will rely on you guys,” said Mrs. Dam.
Truc and her husband also “criticized” her for being very frugal – refusing to eat nutritious food or travel , even though they begged her many times. She said that she promised to change about this. “As for quitting selling, I won’t promise.”
At the end of the program, she expressed her wish that her children would live in harmony and that her son-in-law would “drink less” to take care of his wife and children. In front of his wife and mother-in-law, Luc promised to do this.
