1,500 dialysis sessions, discharge papers weighing 3kg Ms. Do Thi Thu Nga, born in 1981, literature teacher, October High School (My Bang commune, Yen Son district, Tuyen Quang province), one of 58 excellent teachers honored at the "Sharing with teachers" program in 2023. Before returning to Hanoi to attend the commendation ceremony on the occasion of November 20 this year, Ms. Nga took advantage of last weekend to organize a trip for her class 12A2 to Tuyen Quang city park. To have this trip, she spent her own money, asked for more from outside sources, and used the class fund because the mountainous school is 25km from the city, and the budget is still difficult. Looking at the image of the energetic and lively teacher talking and laughing in front of the students, few people would have expected that she had just gone through a long journey of struggling with a life-and-death battle.Ms. Nga and the time of struggling for life and death from blood filtration to kidney dialysis (Photo: Thu Nga).
It is known that Ms. Nga was born in 1981. For more than 3 years now, she has been reborn when doctors at Hospital 103 successfully performed a kidney transplant, even though she had to undergo 6 more surgeries after the transplant. From a skinny teacher weighing only 36kg because of struggling with illness, Ms. Nga has gained 10kg and is also happier. It is known that in 2009, after graduating from the literature pedagogy major and teaching for 6 years, Ms. Nga discovered that she had stage 3 kidney failure. "I felt devastated at that time. The disease became more and more severe, my body began to swell, I was tired, exhausted, mentally exhausted, and desperate, as if the spring had run out of energy. I was scared because I was not even 30 years old but had a serious illness, every time I turned off the lights to go to sleep, I was startled and scared, afraid that death would come suddenly. I was always haunted by the beeping sounds and the flashing lights of the dialysis machine with jumping numbers, at that time tears welled up. That was the most terrible time of my life," Ms. Nga recalled. The cost of the surgery was nearly 900 million VND, but she and her husband used up all their savings and could only get 150 million VND. The rest, she borrowed from everywhere, from relatives, family, friends and colleagues. To have money for treatment, Ms. Nga taught and opened a sweet soup shop at the market, then sold goods online. "I did whatever I could to make money. I was skinny, only 36kg, my face was rough and dark, and my hands were covered in broken blood vessels. There was a year near Tet, people were in the hospital but the house was full of goods to sell for Tet. My whole family rushed to the market to sell sweet soup, popcorn, whatever they could sell," Ms. Nga said. After more than 11 years of wearing out her legs on dialysis from Hanoi to Tuyen Quang, along with 1,500 dialysis sessions, with discharge papers weighing more than 3kg, fate finally smiled on this teacher thanks to a kidney transplant in 2020.Ms. Nga after kidney transplant surgery (Photo: Thu Nga).
Inspiring example Despite many years of struggling with illness, Ms. Nga always strives to work and is an excellent teacher. After more than 20 years on the podium, she has received a total of nearly 20 certificates of merit from the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Education and Training and other levels. Many of her initiatives and experiences are highly appreciated by students and colleagues such as: drawing mind maps; applying the method of integrating the subjects of geography, history, biology, and civic education into teaching literature; applying the diagram model into teaching literature at high school level. Ms. Nga's initiatives have not only been responded to and spread in October High School but have also been introduced at a number of national and provincial conferences on innovation in testing and evaluation to promote innovation in teaching methods. For many years, Ms. Nga has participated in training excellent students at the provincial level to achieve high results. She also actively mobilized resources to organize study trips to historical and cultural sites to help students improve their learning skills in literature in particular and other subjects. In 2015, Ms. Nga was honored to be a guest speaker at VTV's "Instead of gratitude" program. In 2022, she continued to receive the title "Outstanding citizen of Tuyen Quang province". In the same year, the group of authors from Ms. Nga's class won first prize at the provincial level and third prize at the ministerial level in the "Teachers in my eyes" video design contest.Ms. Nga in a literature class at school (Photo: Thu Nga).
Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, Ms. Nga said that after the surgery, she still had to take medicine every day. "Hot porridge, pay off debt at the same time", she taught and sold online to earn extra money, taking medicine and paying off the surgery debt. "I teach at a school in a remote area of the province, where the students' living conditions are still difficult. Here, many ethnic minority students, especially the poor Mong ethnic group, often drop out of school. However, with her care, love, and encouragement, she often goes to the students' homes to understand, share and encourage them, so they have made remarkable progress. "My current homeroom class has 41 students, always united, loving each other and loving her, striving to improve in all aspects. That is my greatest joy", Ms. Nga said. Evaluating Ms. Nga, the school leader said that she is a very dynamic and creative person, responsible in the assigned work, an example of perseverance for the teachers and students of the school. On the occasion of November 20 this year, Ms. Nga was honored to be one of 58 teachers honored at the program "Sharing with teachers" jointly organized by the Ministry of Education and Training, the Youth Union, the Ethnic Committee and related units.
