According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in the first 10 months of this year, Vietnam exported chili peppers worth 22 million USD. Currently, Laos is Vietnam's leading export market, followed by China.
According to VPSA, in 2022, Vietnam exported about 5,000 tons of chili, with a turnover of about 11.9 million USD; by 2023, the turnover increased to 20 million USD, equivalent to more than 10,000 tons; suddenly, in nearly 10 months of this year, the export turnover reached 22.2 million USD.
If in the past, South Korea and the US ate a lot of Vietnamese chili, from 2022 to now, the leading export markets are China and Laos; accounting for 33% and 43% of the market share, respectively.
On October 31, Tuoi Tre Online spoke with the leader of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) about the chili export situation. This person admitted that the two major "customers" of Vietnamese chili are currently China and Laos.
Explaining this, the VPSA leader said: "China has Sichuan hot pot as a traditional dish. This dish is spicy, full of chili and pepper. Especially in the cold winter, Chinese people eat more spicy hot pot.
Therefore, in the last months of the year, China imports a lot of chili, especially dried chili. Previously, the supply to China was mostly from Indian chili, but the supply was in short supply so this market turned to eating a lot of Vietnamese chili.
Meanwhile, the spicy flavor of spices is an indispensable part of Lao cuisine, so Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan (HCMC, agricultural product purchasing enterprise for export) said:
"The people of the land of a million elephants are very good at eating spicy food and dried chili is the main spice in dishes. Chili is collected in Vietnam and exported to China and Laos for them to make fried chili, pickled chili, chili satay, stewed chili, boiled chili... Purchasing power increases every year, the number of customers looking to buy and sign long-term contracts is also increasing."
According to some experts, because Vietnamese chili is highly spicy and has many different types such as chili pepper, hot chili pepper, yellow horn chili pepper... all very spicy, it is favored by markets such as China, Laos...
Currently, the domestic market records chili prices ranging from 22,000 - 28,000 VND/kg.
Previously, from March 2022, fresh Vietnamese chili was exported to China after quarantine treatment.
In Vietnam, chili plants in Dong Thap and especially in Thanh Binh district are considered "the largest chili granary in the West".
Vietnam exports dried chili peppers second only to India
According to VPSA, in 2020 the world's chili production was about 60 million tons, including hot peppers, bell peppers and green peppers.
Asia is now the world's largest chili-producing region, accounting for about 80% of global production. The global chili trade is worth about $35 billion a year, as much as coffee or tea.
The main chili growing countries are India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Thailand, Vietnam, Romania, China, Nigeria and Mexico…
For dry chillies alone, India is the world's leading producer and exporter, accounting for over 6.11% in 2021, followed by Vietnam, China and Indonesia.
