Preschool children at play corners

Ms. Luong Thi Hong Diep, Head of the Preschool Education Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said so at the training session on the morning of January 4 held at this department, with the participation of many managers and preschool teachers from districts, towns, and Thu Duc City.

The training session focused on guiding the organization of nutrition education activities, teaching children about health, ensuring safety for children in preschools; and educating life skills for preschool children.

Ms. Diep emphasized that teachers who directly raise children should do well from the very small things to educate children about life skills. Such as teaching children how to wash their hands, how to look in the mirror, brush their teeth, wash their face to keep them clean, how to keep their hair neat, how to button their shirts, how to not let rice grains fall when eating, etc.

The school security guard is loved by many students.

"We include career content in children's education, we teach children about how big and beautiful our school is, what the principal's job is. But have we ever taught children about the jobs of janitors and security guards?", Ms. Diep asked.

"Just one lesson teaching children about the professions of teachers and uncles can teach them many good things. For example, when entering the school gate, children need to greet the security guard. When seeing the janitor cleaning the house, children need to walk in a way that does not get the floor dirty and does not affect the work of the janitor. Teaching life skills has very small things, but brings great effectiveness. Teachers do not need to talk big, have a headache finding big topics, but teach children from the smallest things," said Ms. Diep.

Ms. Diep also requested that preschools communicate the content of today's training session to all teachers, and post it on their official websites to promote it to parents. This is also a way to interact, helping parents know how teachers are caring for, educating and educating children safely.

Mistakes in teaching life skills to preschool children

At the training session, Ms. Nguyen Thi Doan Trang, specialist of the Preschool Education Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, pointed out some common mistakes made by teachers and parents when teaching life skills to preschool children.

Common mistakes are underestimating life skills education for preschoolers; always thinking that preschoolers are too young to form skills; not being patient when forming life skills for preschoolers.

Many parents still believe that life skills education is the responsibility of the school; there is a fear of unsafety for children when participating in outdoor activities. Or typically, many adults impose their skills on the experiences and real skills of preschool children.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training noted that when teaching life skills to preschool children, it is necessary to regularly communicate with children; develop rules and regulations with children and implement them together; and persistently guide children on life skills. At the same time, it is necessary to encourage children to participate in collective, free, and self-implemented activities; adults cannot do it for them.

Preschoolers play the role of sellers, buying goods at the role-play corner.

Teachers need to be consistent between the words and actions of adults around children during the life skills education process; adults must be good examples for children... For example, if children are taught to put their shoes away neatly when entering the classroom or home, then wherever they go, teachers cannot leave their shoes carelessly, not in the right place...

Life skills education can be integrated into children's activities such as talking at the beginning of class, talking when picking up and dropping off children. Teachers can let children practice in available or hypothetical situations. Situations need to be natural, not forced, and must absolutely ensure the safety of children.

Principals are responsible for life skills programs.

The Head of the Preschool Education Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said that currently, many life skills education centers want to apply for permission to enter schools to organize educational activities for young children. Regarding this, the Ministry of Education and Training has issued Circular 04 of 2014 regulating the management of life skills education activities and extracurricular educational activities, which must be complied with. School principals must be responsible for approving the program and must strengthen the work of checking capacity records, validity period of the license, legality of approved programs, personnel, etc.
