American expert: Vietnam is a great environment for young people with a tech mind

“During the pandemic, we saw an explosion of virtual interactive platforms like Roblox, as people needed social interaction.

Even though you are isolated, your avatar can 'meet' and interact with other people's avatars, chat, laugh... Then a new communication mechanism has been formed," said Ms. Nicky Jackson Colaco, Vice President and Director of Global Public Policy at technology company Roblox, during a sharing session about the future of AI technology.

Statistics from 2022 show that nearly 6 billion people have connected on Roblox during this period, Colaco said. "It's also easier for people whose nervous systems work differently, like people with ADHD or autism. Whatever way you want to communicate, you can do it here."

On platforms like these, users are provided with tools to create virtual experiences, simulations ranging from a game, to a classroom, to a concert. They do not need to have too much technical or programming skills.

Vietnamese innovators have great potential to take advantage of opportunities from AI

The American expert commented that Vietnam has a great environment with young people who are tech-minded. "You have a company that is in the top 5 in the world in mobile game production, and there are many great game publishers here. You also have many talented people and a workforce in the largest app economy in Southeast Asia. Among the millions of users and thousands of developers, many are women."

Ms. Coloco believes that Vietnamese creators will take advantage of all technologies to develop with this trend, including AI, "a tool that plays an important role in increasing efficiency".

Let AI accompany, not replace, humans

Regarding the necessary skills for young people in the era of artificial intelligence, the American expert said that it is necessary to really understand what the tools are, adapt and learn how to use them properly. "For example, if I use AI technology to write a summary for my school, I should not press the button for AI to do it and then submit it, but I should check it again, add in your own things, so that the product still has your voice. Learn and learn how to use it so that the tool helps you express who you are, not replace your intelligence," she said.

With the potential and impact that AI tools bring, it is important to ensure the safety of users.

For example, personal information like age will be filtered out even if a user mentions it in a chat. Or when there are reports of unsafe behavior, humans will still need to be involved in the moderation process. "Nothing is perfect from the start, but we need to continue to improve and talk about what needs to be done," the expert commented.

AI is not new, but the relationship between humans and AI has changed rapidly in recent years, leading to new concerns, said Ms. Colaco. Governments are working to find a balance between exploiting the potential of AI and ensuring people can use the technology safely and effectively.

"For example, AI systems need to allow users to understand where the content is coming from, what the nature of the content is. The short-term approach will be what can and can't be done, but I think further down the road we will need to come up with ground rules, because things are changing so quickly and what is stated today may not be true a year from now," said Ms. Colaco.
