Football expert Justinus Lhaksana has asked the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) to replace coach Shin Tae-yong if Indonesia qualifies for the World Cup. Justinus Lhaksana believes that the Indonesian national team needs a new coach if they want to achieve good results at the World Cup.
Justinus Lhaksana, former coach of the Indonesian futsal team, said he was confused by Shin Tae-yong's decisions, especially in rotating the squad.
One of the matches mentioned by coach Justinus Lhaksana was when Shin Tae-yong left many key players on the bench in the away match against China in the 4th match of Group C, 3rd qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia on October 15. As a result, the Indonesian team lost to China 1-2.
Coach Shin Tae-yong is facing pressure after the Indonesian team was eliminated from the group stage of the 2024 AFF Cup.
"Because our goal is to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, I doubt whether he (Shin Tae-yong) is the right coach to take Indonesia to the World Cup. I was really disappointed when we faced the Chinese national team, where he did not field his strongest team. Thom Haye only played in the second half and immediately scored," said coach Justinus Lhaksana.
In Group C of the 3rd qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia, Australia is in second place with 7 points, while Indonesia is in third place with 6 points. Teams such as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and China also have 6 points but are behind due to inferior goal difference.
"If we draw with China, maybe that 1 point can decide whether Indonesia will qualify for the World Cup or not. From 2nd to 6th place, the gap is only 1 point. In terms of player quality, the Indonesian team is not inferior to Australia or Saudi Arabia," said coach Justinus Lhaksana.
" With this rotation, I'm not sure if coach Shin Tae-yong is the right person. I'm also not sure if coach Shin Tae-yong can help the Indonesian team reach the level of the teams participating in the World Cup. In my opinion, if the Indonesian team wins the World Cup, PSSI must replace Shin Tae-yong. If we want to perform well in the World Cup, he must be replaced," coach Justinus Lhaksana emphasized.
The Indonesian national team was eliminated in the group stage of the AFF Cup 2024. Ahead of the team are two matches against Australia and Bahrain in March next year in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
