(To Quoc) - Affirming that digital transformation is a "leading, objective and inevitable" factor for tourism development, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ho An Phong said: Thanks to the application of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), smart platforms, the "face" of Vietnam's tourism industry has had positive changes in 2024, bringing completely new experiences...

On December 29, the Ministry of Information and Communications held a conference to review 2024 and deploy tasks for 2025. Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc attended and delivered a speech at the conference.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ho An Phong said that the tourism industry has made a spectacular recovery in 2024 and is a bright spot in socio-economic development. Digital transformation has made an important contribution to this achievement.

Specifically, in 2024, Vietnam will welcome 17.5 million international visitors, an increase of 3.59% over the same period in 2023, with total revenue of VND 850,000 billion, an increase of 23.8%, and domestic visitors reaching 110 million. Thanks to digital transformation, the tourism industry will shift from B2B to B2C, reducing intermediary travel agencies and representative offices, as customers book tours directly in the digital space.

Deputy Minister Ho An Phong commented: "For tourism, digital transformation is at the forefront, inevitable and objective. When applying digital technology, AI, and smart platforms, tourism will develop very quickly and sustainably."

Thanks to important policies and directions from the Government and the Prime Minister, and the smooth coordination between ministries, sectors, and localities, digital transformation activities in tourism this year have seen many positive developments. Localities have many good and diverse models, creating many tourism products with modern technology content.

For example, Ho Chi Minh City applies smart tourism software on iOS, Android, deploys 3D applications to recreate the city space from above; Hanoi applies technology, smart destinations on the tourism information portal; or Da Nang actively uses virtual reality, VR360, automatic bilingual commentary... These activities help enhance the tourism experience for customers in a visual and vivid way.

In 2024, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will focus on developing a smart tourism ecosystem in a synchronous and unified manner to serve state management, tourism business and improve tourist experience.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism researches and develops a set of criteria to evaluate the National Digital Platform for Tourism Management and Business; a set of indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of smart tourism destinations; issues guidance documents and organizes training for localities and businesses to implement digital transformation in tourism.

The Ministry is also implementing three projects: digitizing heritage, smart tourism and the Ministry's operations center. In addition, it is mobilizing resources from international organizations, social networking platforms, and signing cooperation agreements to connect smart tourism around the world.

In the process of implementing digital transformation, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has always received close coordination from the Information and Communications sector, localities, and digital technology enterprises nationwide. Thanks to the advice and support, after the initial confusing phase, the tourism industry now has specific and unified solutions to avoid fragmentation and waste.

Recognizing the importance of digital transformation in tourism, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has created an important legal corridor, approved and issued the Tourism Database System Project; Project on applying technology of Industry 4.0 to develop smart tourism, promoting tourism to become a spearhead economic sector...

This is a plan to develop the overall tourism industry database, setting long-term and short-term goals in building a database for connection and interconnection.

Besides positive results in tourism digital transformation, the whole industry faces a number of intertwined challenges such as requiring large resources, high quality human resources, unsynchronized digital infrastructure, and not creating a solid foundation.

However, Deputy Minister Ho An Phong believes that with the spirit of the Party, the State, the Government's management, the close coordination with ministries, branches, localities and social resources, digital transformation of tourism will have new changes. The tourism industry is fully capable of achieving double-digit growth in the era of national development.

“With Vietnam's resources, people, culture, and developed tourism platforms combined with digital transformation, tourism can completely catch up with the world in 7 to 10 years,” said the Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
