At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, former member of the Politburo, former Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, former Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, former student of Duc Tai Guilin School, Guangxi (China) shared about the time he studied in China when he was only 13 years old. At that time, due to the war, the Party and Uncle Ho decided, with the consent of the Chinese Government, to send Vietnamese students to study at Duc Tai Guilin School, Guangxi (China).

Mr. Nhan recalled that at that time, both Vietnam and China were facing difficulties. But when it came to meals at the Duc Tai school kitchen, only Vietnamese students had a meal, 4-6 people/table. His first impression was that the neighboring country had given Vietnamese students the best conditions to study.

Mr. Nhan emphasized: “At that time, when we students returned to our country, some went to war, some became professors, or generals in the army, and later became leaders of the Party and State. But no matter who we were, we always kept in our hearts the feelings of our friendly country. We reminded ourselves that we were a part of Vietnam’s history and had the responsibility to foster the relationship between Vietnam and China.”

Regarding the expectation of the relationship between the two countries, Mr. Nhan also said that in 1925, Uncle Ho first visited China, and it has been 100 years now. When Uncle Ho organized the first training course for the three countries, there were 75 Vietnamese people studying, but now we have more than 20,000 Vietnamese students studying in China, and 1,500 Chinese students and postgraduates in Vietnam. There are Vietnamese students graduating with a Master's degree in China, and Chinese students graduating with a PhD in Vietnam, which reflects the trend of the two countries increasingly exchanging and connecting.

“I think that the opportunity for comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and China has never been as good as it is today. General Secretary To Lam has repeatedly affirmed that education and training, together with science and technology, are extremely important factors for our country to develop faster and more sustainably, entering a new era. We are laying the “roots”, we are cooperating in education, economic cooperation, and certainly in the coming time, the future of Vietnam and China will develop more and more brilliantly. When China celebrates the 100th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, and Vietnam celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam - PV), we are very proud of our contributions to each country and building the special Vietnam-China relationship.

At the meeting, Ms. Lu My Niem, a teacher at Guangxi Normal University, who used to work as an interpreter at Guilin Yutai School, Guangxi, also shared that at that time she was 26 years old and felt that the international students were like brothers and sisters. Thanks to the education of Uncle Ho and Uncle Mao Zedong, she is now able to speak both Vietnamese and Chinese.

“At that time, China was also very poor, people had to wear patched and torn clothes, and had little food, but priority was given to international students from Vietnam. As someone who lived in both Vietnam and China, I felt like family, the teachers and principal treated us like their own children,” Ms. Niem emotionally shared.
