During the peak of the hot season in Saigon, the small refreshment shop on the corner of the street owned by Ms. Hien and her husband regularly sells 400-600 glasses of water per day, earning 4-6 million VND.
"Raking in the money" in the hot season
"It's hot, every time I travel from home to work and back, I have to drink 2-3 glasses of water to endure it," said a customer waiting at a water stall on Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City).

On this route, beverage shops have sprung up side by side, bustling with customers. The sugarcane ice shop owned by Tran Thi My Hien (38 years old) and her husband also serves customers non-stop.
Ms. Hien said that when the shop first opened, it only sold about 100 cups per day. In Ho Chi Minh City, at the peak of the dry season, the terrible heat lasted for a long time, causing purchasing power to increase 5 times. On average, she could sell 400-500 cups of water per day, with a peak of 600 cups. The couple had to hire 2 more employees to keep up with the large number of customers.
The shop opens from 9:30 to 22:30, earning 4-6 million VND/day from the sugarcane juice machine. In addition to the traditional flavor, the sugarcane juice and pennywort at her shop are also attractive because they are mixed with other ingredients such as green beans, durian,... with prices ranging from 10,000-20,000 VND/cup.
The restaurant's busiest times are at noon and in the evening.
"When the weather is hot, customers are more demanding and do not want to wait long. Sometimes, because there are too many customers, the shop cannot serve them in time, some people get angry and leave, making my husband and I feel regretful," Ms. Hien shared.

5 months to fully repay 100 million invested in the restaurant
While the shop was spinning like a top, the owner was suddenly startled when she heard the cry of her newborn baby. Ms. Hien had to quickly put down her tools and run inside to comfort her baby.
The young mother said that since starting her business, she has been busy running the shop and taking care of her baby who has not yet been weaned. Taking advantage of the business season, Ms. Hien only sleeps a few hours a day.
She finished work late at night, had to wake up early in the morning to prepare ingredients and then stand and sell all day, her legs were tired and numb. Many times, she thought of giving up because of exhaustion, but then got up and continued working because of her strong motivation to make a living.
"There are times when there are many guests, my baby sits alone, cries, calms down and falls asleep by himself. Compared to other children, my child is at a disadvantage, spending all day just hanging around the four corners of the wall.
I feel sorry for my child and feel guilty because I don't have much time left for him. But for him to have a better future, we have to work hard and try to earn more money to improve our lives," she choked up.

Ms. Hien was born into a poor family. At the age of 11, her family's circumstances were difficult, so she had to drop out of school to work as a seamstress.
"At that time, I was very sad because I wanted to continue studying, but due to difficult circumstances, my mother told me to go to sewing school so that I could soon have a job to earn a living," she said.
After completing her apprenticeship, she started sewing. That was her main source of income at that time. After many years of working there, she developed her small sewing shop into a processing workshop and created additional jobs for many local people.
When she got married and had children, because she didn't have much time for the sewing workshop, she decided to end her journey with the sewing profession after more than 20 years.
With 100 million VND in savings, in November 2023, she and her husband decided to start a beverage business, using that money to buy machinery, raw materials, and rent premises.
At first, both of them researched and learned how to mix the drinks. After many failures, she finally came up with her own recipe, attracting many customers.

After 5 months of opening the shop, she was able to recover her capital and have money to reinvest.
She added: "In the beginning, there will definitely be many difficulties in business. With hard work, I think I can overcome any difficulty. Seeing the number of customers increasing, I am as happy as a feather in my cap. What makes me happiest is having a good source of income to take care of my children."
