Humanitarian Month has been implemented by the Vietnam Red Cross since 2018. After 5 years of implementation, it has contributed to strongly changing the awareness of Party committees, authorities, organizations and individuals towards humanitarian work, creating a large movement of mutual love and support in the community, bringing highlights and outstanding results compared to regular humanitarian activities.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a private humanitarian organization founded in 1863 in Geneva. The 25-member Committee has the sole mandate under international humanitarian law to protect the life and dignity of victims of international and internal armed conflicts. The ICRC has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize three times.
The founding of the International Committee of the Red Cross marked the birth of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the largest humanitarian movement in the world.
In memory of the founder of the Movement, Henry Dunant's birthday (8/5) was chosen as World Red Cross Day. In 1948, the first official celebration of World Red Cross Day was held.
In 1984, the International Red Cross Day was renamed the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. This is an opportunity for humanitarian workers around the world to proudly review the long-standing historical tradition of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, continue to affirm and promote its role, and organize humanitarian activities to help the most vulnerable people in the community through a large network of staff and volunteers around the world.
