US House Speaker Mike Johnson survives impeachment vote

Democrats and Republicans voted 359-43 to retain Mr Johnson as Speaker of the House, avoiding a repeat of the turmoil that occurred in October when Republicans ousted his predecessor Kevin McCarthy.

Former President Donald Trump, who is running for the White House as a Republican, also said in a social media post on Wednesday that it was “not the time” for Republicans to try to remove their own House Speaker.

“I appreciate the confidence my colleagues have in me to bring down this misguided effort,” Mr Johnson said after the vote. Greene had previously criticised Mr Johnson for a series of compromises with Democrats.

Mr Johnson has upset hard-liners in the US House of Representatives by agreeing to pass a bipartisan budget bill and aid package for US allies including Ukraine, without demanding strict security measures on the US-Mexico border that Democrats have rejected.
